Scott McTominay had admitted he's 'desperate' to win a trophy with Manchester United and that he believes lifting silverware could aid the club's progression in the Premier League.

The midfielder's influence on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side has continued to grow this season, playing a part in 25 of their 29 league outings.

The Red Devils are enduring something of a barren spell in terms of winning trophies - by their high standards - with their last taste of silverware coming back in 2017 as Jose Mourinho led the club to their maiden Europa League triumph.

And McTominay believes it's crucial for United's development that their wait for another trophy doesn't go on much longer.

"I'm just desperate to win a trophy in club football with Manchester United, that's my priority at the moment," he told Sky Sports.

"The rest, in terms of the league and how we want to progress, will hopefully follow suit in due course."

Since establishing himself in the United first-team setup, McTominay's international career has also gone from strength to strength.

The 24-year-old played the full 90 minutes for Scotland as they kicked off their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-2 draw at home to Austria on Thursday.

McTominay has shown his positional flexibility by filling in at centre-back on a number of occasions for his country, and while he's happy to play wherever Steve Clarke asks him to, he admits he prefers his usual midfield role.

"It's like normality, being back in midfield but wherever the manager wants me to play, I'm happy to do so," he added.

"That's genuine, if he said 'I want you to play here, I want you to play there', I wouldn't question him [Clarke], I would just do it because that's what we need, everybody to be pushing in the right direction.
"You saw that with the Euros [qualification] and it's a really good thing."
