Sandro Tonali's representatives say their client wants to end a "very painful" period of his life after being charged by the Football Association with further betting offences.

The 23-year-old is currently serving a ten-month ban after he admitted to placing bets on former club AC Milan during his time at San Siro.

Fresh charges were levelled at Tonali by the FA last week, alleging the Italian breached FA Rule E8 50 times by placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2023.

Tonali has until Friday to respond to the charges, having complied with investigations to date, and it's likely that any further ban would be served concurrently with his existing punishment.

A statement released by Tonali's agency, GR Sports, says the latest action is a result of self-reporting to the FA, with the midfielder intent on putting a "definitive end" to a negative period of his life and career.

"It should be noted, in relation to the reports in the English and Italian press, that the ongoing investigation is a due act after Newcastle player Sandro Tonali, decided in October 2023 to self-report to the FA, as he had previously done with the FIGC, in order to clarify his position regarding the betting he had carried out at a time prior to the start of the proceedings in Italy.

"We are therefore not talking about anything new but simply about recurring facts before the Italian disqualification, which the player voluntarily wanted to bring to light even to the English Federation to put a definitive end to a negative and very painful parenthesis of his life”.

"Sandro Tonali will continue to fully cooperate with the FA as he did with the FIGC and do everything possible to ensure that these proceedings can be resolved as quickly as possible."

Tonali has played 12 games for Newcastle in all competitions and will be free to compete in competitive matches from 27 August 2024 - ruling him out of contention for Euro 2024 with Italy.
