San Jose Earthquakes re-sign homegrown defender Tommy Thompson to new deal

The San Jose Earthquakes have re-signed defender Tommy Thompson to a new contract ahead of the 2023 campaign.
Thompson has agreed a one-year deal, with the Quakes holding an option to keep the homegrown for an extra season in 2024.
The 27-year-old is now San Jose's longest-serving current player following the retirement of Shea Salinas, while he's set to become the Quakes' first-ever player to feature in each of his first 10 professional seasons at the club.
“Tommy is a talented player, a positive influence in our locker room, and a role model for our community,” San Jose general manager Chris Leitch said in a club press release. “His longevity with the club is a testament to his hard work and determination, and we’re excited to welcome him back for 2023.”
Since emerging as the Quakes' first-ever homegrown signing in 2014, Thompson has become a regular, making 200 appearances across all competitions to date, scoring five goals and providing 15 assists.
184 of those appearances have come in Major League Soccer, with only Chris Wondolowski (376), Salinas (332), and Ramiro Corrales (250) making more.
At international level, Thompson was capped 14 times for the United States at U20 level, though has never featured for the senior team.
Thompson's re-signing is the latest step as the Quakes prepare to bounce back in the 2023 campaign under head coach Luchi Gonzalez, who will look to lift the club off the bottom of the Western Conference and back into the MLS Cup Playoffs.
