Ryan Giggs Denies Allegations of Assaulting Girlfriend Following Arrest

Wales manager and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has denied all allegations of assault against him following his arrest by Greater Manchester Police on suspicion of assaulting girlfriend Kate Greville on Sunday night.

GMP confirmed that a 46-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of section 47 assault and section 39 common assault. Giggs has been released on bail pending further inquiries. A police spokesman said a woman in her thirties suffered ‘minor injuries but did not require any treatment.’

It has been reported that Giggs had earlier spent the day at Hotel Football by Old Trafford for the United game against Arsenal. He is also thought to have visited the Stock Exchange Hotel in Manchester city centre, before returning to the house he shares with Greville in Salford.

FAW has said it is ‘aware of an alleged incident involving the National Team Manager, Ryan Giggs’, while a press conference scheduled for Tuesday during which the retired winger was supposed to announce his Wales squad for later this month has been cancelled.

A public statement on behalf of Giggs said he ‘denies all allegations of assault made against him. He is cooperating with the police and will continue to assist them with their ongoing investigations.’

Wales are due to face the United States in a friendly at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium on 12 November to kick off this month’s international break, ahead of back-to-back home UEFA Nations League fixtures against Republic of Ireland and Finland in Cardiff.

Wales sit top of League B group 4 and are yet to concede in four games. They have beaten Bulgaria (twice) and Finland with solitary late goals and drew 0-0 against Ireland in Dublin last month. Should they hold onto first place in the final fixtures they will be promoted to League A and be playing against Europe’s elite nations in the 2022/23 Nations League competition.
