Ronald Araujo has signed a new contract with Barcelona, committing his future to the club until 2026.

The Uruguay international has become one of Barça's most important players, establishing himself ahead of Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti as a regular in central defence alongside Gerard Pique.

Araujo had been linked with a move away from Catalonia, with his previous deal due to expire in 2023. Premier League sides Manchester United and Liverpool were both rumoured to be in for the defender, but Barça have now confirmed that new terms have been agreed.

The club's statement reads: "FC Barcelona and the player Ronald Araujo have reached an agreement to renew his contract until 30 June 2026. The buy out clause stipulated is set at €1bn."

Barcelona have been targeting some of their younger stars for new contracts in recent months. Teenagers Ansu Fati and Pedri are both tied down to long-term deals and the club plan on doing more business before the season is done.

90min understands Xavi's side hope to finalise a new deal for midfield prodigy Gavi before the campaign ends. The 17-year-old has enjoyed a breakout season for both club and country, featuring regularly at Camp Nou and making his debut for Spain.

They will also be bolstered by some summer additions. Andreas Christensen is expected to join as a free agent from Chelsea. Cesar Azpilicueta has also been linked with Barça, though the Blues recently triggered a one-year contract extension in the Spaniard's deal.

On the pitch, Barça have suffered a dip in form, losing two of their last three La Liga games. However, they remain second ahead of their clash with Mallorca on Sunday.
