The ten men of Juventus will have considered themselves lucky to escape with a point against Roma after Cristiano Ronaldo's double cancelled out Jordan Veretout's brace.

Though La Vecchia Signora got their Serie A campaign off to a great start with a 3-0 win against Sampdoria, it was Roma who showed the early intent at the beginning of the match, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan unlucky not to score after carving open Juve's defence with some clever dribbling.

A breakthrough came when Veretout's shot hit Adrien Rabiot's arm, with a penalty awarded to the former and a yellow card shown to the latter. Veretout promptly converted, but Juventus would then be awarded a penalty of their own after Lorenzo Pellegrini's handball (a lot of handballs lately, eh?), and Ronaldo did what he usually does from the spot to square things up.

But the fun wasn't over in a frenetic first half, with Roma simply breaking from a Juventus free-kick, going up the other end and adding a second through Veretout. When Rabiot picked up a second yellow for an unwise challenge in the second half, Roma found themselves with a great opportunity to beat the champions.

Edin Dzeko missed a couple of glorious chances for the lead before we were treated to one of football's great inevitabilities, as Ronaldo towered between Gianluca Mancini and Bruno Peres to score a towering header which should be impossible for a man of his age.

Things stayed pretty tight from there with neither side able to find a winner, but Roma will surely regret not taking a huge chance not to topple the Goliath of Serie A.

ROMA

1. Goalkeeper and Defenders

Antonio Mirante (GK) - 6/10 - Not an awful lot he could've done about either of the goals, one being a penalty and the other having defied the laws of physics.

Marash Kumbulla (CB) - 8/10 - On a rather disappointing night from a Roma perspective, their astonishingly quick young centre-back looked a real find for the club on his debut, keeping Dejan Kulusevski quiet.

Ibañez (CB) - 7/10 - Another exciting defensive prospect for Roma, the Brazilian was solid, organising the back five nicely against the might of Juventus.

Gianluca Mancini (CB) - 5/10 - Ronaldo - probably not a guy you want to lose in the penalty area. Still, Mancini didn't know he was going to do that for his second equaliser.

2. Midfielders & Wing-Backs

Leonardo Spinazzola (RWB) - 7/10 - The full-back seems to get better with age, sticking in as he so often does a couple of excellent crosses. Loses marks due to Danilo's cross for Ronaldo's winner coming on his side.

Jordan Veretout (CM)
- 9/10 - Forced a penalty, scored a penalty, scored another nice finish, and to top it off was well on top of Rabiot and Weston McKennie throughout. A great day at the office.

Lorenzo Pellegrini (CM) - 6/10 - Might have done better after conceding the penalty with an ill-advised handball, but won the header for the counter-attacking move which put Roma 2-1 up.

Davide Santon (LWB) - 6/10 - The former Newcastle man gets his fair share of stick from Roma fans, but was actually perfectly serviceable today. Possible that him being substituted for Peres negatively impacted Roma's chances of winning.

3. Forwards

Pedro (RW) - 6/10 - A useful enough night for the three-time Champions League winner, whose passing was tidy throughout the game.

Edin Dzeko (ST) - 7/10 - Where do you start with this performance? Dzeko made a nuisance of himself in magnificent fashion, carving out great openings with his strength and guile, and thoroughly bullied two of the greatest centre-backs of all time. But his finishing was disgusting, and the two shots which he sent straight at Szczęsny cost Roma.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (LW) - 8/10 - A cracking evening from a man who is looking increasingly at home in Italy. Skinned Leonardo Bonucci early doors, and perfectly weighted his assist to Veretout at the end of the first half. Might he be back to his best?

Wojciech Szczęsny (GK) - 6/10 - Could he have got a stronger hand to Veretout's penalty? Very possibly. Elsewhere, the former Arsenal man was more than competent, saving a number of decent efforts from Pedro, Mkhitaryan and Dzeko.

Danilo (CB) - 8/10 - Great performance. Stood up to an absolute onslaught of quality wing-back play from Spinazzola, and set up Ronaldo's equaliser with the sort of cross that CR7 gets on the end of in his dreams.

Leonardo Bonucci (CB) - 5/10 - Sent for a hotdog by Mkhitaryan in the initial stages of the game, and looked fairly uncomfortable throughout as Dzeko put himself about a bit.

Giorgio Chiellini (CB) - 5/10 - Not often you see a less than note-perfect performance from this man, but he also struggled to contain the Bosnian forward, and was lucky on one occasion that Dzeko didn't get him sent off.

6. Midfielders & Wing-Backs

Dejan Kulusevski (RWB) - 6/10 - Some lovely touches from the Swede, but it seems to be a waste of his abilities to have him as a wing-back. Taken off late to give Gianluca Frabotta some minutes.

Adrien Rabiot (CM)
- 4/10 - If you take away the penalty and red card, a pretty decent night. If you add in the penalty and red card, however, it has to be chalked down as a pretty bad evening.

Weston McKennie (CM) - 5/10 - McKennie was superb on his debut against Sampdoria but looked a little off the pace here against the rampant Veretout, and was nowhere near alert enough for Roma's second goal.

Aaron Ramsey (CM) - 5/10 - A quiet evening all things considered, though he did come close to getting on the end of an excellent cross from Ronaldo.

Juan Cuadrado (LWB) - 5/10 - Another sketchy performance during a ropey night at the back for Juve. Was floored by Dzeko and one point, and suffered the ignominy of being skinned by Santon.

Alvaro Morata (ST) - 5/10 - As with any Morata game, he ran himself into the ground, but in the first game since his return to Juventus he looked to be lacking sharpness.

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) - 9/10 - Man of the Match. He might not be capable of doing this as often any more, but this was a fantastic performance with almost every other Juventus player having an off-night. He created and put away chances in equal measure to turn what would have been a fatigued Juve performance into a precious point.
