Playmaker Rodolfo Pizarro has completed his loan return to Monterrey from Inter Miami, with an option to buy included in the deal.

The Mexico international joined the Herons from Rayados ahead of their inaugural 2020 MLS season on a Designated Player (DP) contract.

Despite high expectations after winning multiple team and individual honors in Liga MX, Pizarro has struggled to adjust to MLS. The 27-year-old has registered just six goals and nine assists in 43 MLS regular-season appearances for Inter Miami across the last two campaigns.

Head coach Phil Neville and sporting director Chris Henderson have been hard at work restructuring the club's roster this winter after missing out on the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2021. Although the move won't open up a DP spot for Inter Miami, it will clear the maximum salary budget charge of $612,500 on the salary cap.

“This loan gives the club more options to continue managing our roster,” Henderson said in an official club press release. “We are working tirelessly to acquire the right players that will help us attain our objectives moving forward. We’re glad to have found an opportunity for Rodolfo to continue developing in Mexico and wish him well during his loan.”

Gonzalo Higuain and Blaise Matuidi remain in Florida on DP contracts but, according to reports, the latter could follow Pizarro out of the door.

The 34-year-old World Cup winner arrived at the club in June 2020 but has failed to show his best form. Matuidi has just one year left on his deal and Inter Miami have already moved to replace him, signing 28-year-old Brazilian midfielder Jean Mota from Santos in December.

Alongside his substantial wage packed, the departure of Matuidi would provide Neville with a precious DP spot to fill with a top-class talent.

Inter Miami begin their 2022 campaign at home to the Chicago Fire on February 26.
