Robert Lewandowski ruled out of England clash with knee injury

Poland striker Robert Lewandowski will miss his side's World Cup qualifier against England on Wednesday after suffering a knee injury, it has been confirmed.

The Bayern Munich striker scored twice, once either side of half-time, in Sunday's 3-0 win over Andorra but was substituted on 63 minutes with an apparent knock.

Manager Paulo Sousa revealed after the game that Lewandowski 'felt a pain in his knee', throwing his availability for the next fixture against England into doubt

Following assessment, it has now been confirmed by the Polish FA that the striker has suffered damage to the 'collateral ligament' of the right knee.

The statement reads: "Clinical and imaging studies have shown damage to the collateral ligament of the right knee.

"The short time remaining until the next match of the national team excludes the participation of the national team captain [Lewandowski] in this match.

"This would carry too much risk of aggravating the injury. This decision is the only right one, bearing in mind the upcoming EURO 2020 tournament."

While fans of the Polish national side will be disappointed by the fact they will be without their star man for their trip to Wembley, those watching on from Bavaria will have even greater concerns.

Lewandowski will now return to Bayern in order to start his rehabilitation, which is hoped will only take up to 10 days.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker has once again been in fine form this season scoring an incredible 42 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions.

At the weekend, Hansi Flick's side are due to face their Bundesliga title rivals RB Leipzig before taking on Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final the following week.

The risk of potentially being without their talismanic striker in two such crucial fixtures will no doubt come as a huge blow to the German outfit, who are seeking back-to-back league and Champions League titles.
