Robert Lewandowki’s 10 Best Goals of the Season
By Ross Jackson
Football is an ever-evolving sport, however, season after season one thing remains the same: Robert Lewandowski continues to score goals.
The Polish hitman notched a staggering 34 league goals in 31 Bundesliga games this season - a record high for a non-German striker in the top division - spearheading Bayern Munich’s charge to their eighth consecutive championship.
Not content with dominating domestically, the 31-year-old’s 11 goals in six Champions League games see him sitting top of Europe’s premier competition’s goalscoring charts too.
While the former Borussia Dortmund man’s lofty figures are already impressive; the quality of some of his strikes are just as much cause for celebration as the quantity.
This season Lewandowski yet again showcased his special talent for scoring great goals, so sit back and enjoy 90min’s rundown of his top ten goals from the campaign.
1. Schalke 0-3 Bayern Munich
The Bavarians travelled to Schalke on matchday two in need of a lift having dropped points at home to Hertha BSC on the opening day; Lewandowski provided that lift.
The Poland captain grabbed his second of the game and fourth of the season with a terrific free kick from almost 25 yards. The strike had pace, whip and bend, leaving Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nübel grasping at thin air as the ball sailed past him into the top corner.
2. Bayern Munich 6-1 Werder Bremen
A goal which sums up the qualities of the Bayern frontman.
He picked up the ball with his back to goal before laying it off to Thomas Müller. Not content with his link-up play, Lewandowski was instantly on the move, running in behind the Werder Bremen defence, controlling Müller’s return ball brilliantly with the outside of his boot before powering it into the back of the net.
3. Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 Bayern Munich
Despite another stellar domestic campaign, Bayern struggled in the first half of the season, recording four losses prior to the turn of the year.
The worst of those undoubtedly came at Eintracht Frankfurt where they suffered a humiliating 5-1 thumping. However, not to be denied his customary goal, Lewandowski picked up the ball and rolled three Eintracht defenders with one spin before coolly slipping the ball under Frederik Rønnow, to grab his tenth goal in as many league appearances.
4. FC Köln 1-4 Bayern Munich
Despite the majority of his strikes coming with his favoured-right foot, the Poland international is no slouch with his left.
Yet more slick Bayern passing saw Müller measure an inch-perfect through ball, with Lewandowski effortlessly taking the ball in his stride before lashing it with his laces into the top corner.
5. Tottenham Hotspur 2-7 Bayern Munich
A goal which typifies the instinctive nature of the big man’s finishing. At 1-1 with the clock ticking down to half time, Tottenham were well set in their Champions League clash with the Bavarians, but one piece of magic changed the whole complexion of the game.
Lewandowski picked up the loose ball with his back to goal, took one touch to manoeuvre himself into space before wrapping his foot around the ball on the turn and hammering it past Hugo Lloris into the bottom corner.
6. Schalke 0-3 Bayern Munch
Another from the Bavarians' win at Schalke in August.
Not content with two goals for the afternoon, the Bundesliga’s leading marksman completely outfoxed the Schalke defence with one simple deft touch to create himself a pocket of space, before firing a clinical right-footed drive into the back of the net.
7. Bayern Munich 4-2 Borussia Dortmund
A huge game into the context of Bayern’s season.
Hans-Dieter Flick’s men had won just five of their opening ten league fixtures and knew a win against fellow title-chasers Dortmund was a must.
Their talisman set them on their way with a bullet header, stealing in at the front post and straining every muscle in his neck to power Benjamin Pavard’s cross into the far corner. The goal was the hitman’s 15th goal of the season just 11 games in, and saw his side on the way to a convincing 4-0 victory.
8. SC Paderborn 2-3 Bayern Munch
One thing which sets Lewandowski apart from a lot of strikers is his ability to remain calm under pressure.
With two defenders hot on his tale and Paderborn goalkeeper Jannick Huth rushing to close him down, the Bayern number nine displayed all the class and composure which has seen him become a world-class striker to nonchalantly chip the ball over the helpless Huth and into the back of the net.
9. Bayern Munich 6-1 Mainz
Another example of Lewandowski’s ability to take one touch and get his shot away before the goalkeeper has had time to set himself.
The Poland captain once again displayed the deft touch which has seen him become one of the best target men in the game, bringing the ball down in the box before swivelling and firing a pin-point drive into the bottom corner.
10. Bayern Munich 4-2 Borussia Dortmund
The Müller-Lewandowski partnership was an ongoing theme throughout the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign, with the German notching a record 21 assists - topping Kevin de Bruyne’s record of 20 in 2015 with Wolfsburg.
Bayern’s clash with Dortmund was ended as a contest by the lethal duo, with the pair playing a perfect one-two on the edge of the Dortmund box, with the Polish striker taking a touch before calmly rolling the ball into the back of the net.
