Robbie Robinson departs Chile camp to consider international football allegiance

Inter Miami forward Robbie Robinson departed Chile’s camp prior to the 2022 World Cup qualifiers as he considers his international football allegiance. 

Robinson, who was born to a Chilean mother and American father, has long been debating his alignment with the national teams before being called up by Chile to participate in the Conmebol qualifiers against Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia. 

The forward took to social media to announce his sudden departure, reiterating a commitment is yet to be made despite traveling to the South American country. 

"Thank you to the La Roja fans, players, coaches and staff for the warm welcome as I had the honor of joining national team camp," Robinson wrote in an Instagram post Thursday night. "I’ve really enjoyed training with you and feel very grateful for how well you’ve treated me.

"At this time, I’ve decided to return to South Florida to take some time to process my international allegiance while helping Inter Miami CF push for the playoffs."

It is unclear what triggered the player to change his mind. 

Inter Miami confirmed the player is back with the team as they fight for a 2021 play off spot. 

“Inter Miami CF forward Robbie Robinson is set to rejoin the Club in South Florida tonight following his participation in the Chilean National Team camp. The 22-year-old Chilean American, eligible for both national teams, has decided to return to Inter Miami as he considers his international fútbol allegiance.”

The South Florida team currently sits in 11th place on the Eastern Conference table, four spots and eight points away from reaching a postseason position. 

Robinson has recorded 12 appearances for Inter Miami this season, and scored four goals to date in 706 minutes of action.
