Tottenham's Europa Conference League campaign got off to a stuttering start as they were made to hold on to secure a 2-2 draw with Rennes.

Tottenham began the game brightly and profited from some good fortune to take the lead after 11 minutes. Lucas Moura's low cross into the box took a wicked deflection off Loic Bade and trickled into the back of the net.

It took Rennes a little while to get going, but once they did, they came out with a bang. Young full-back Adrien Truffert had an excellent chance with a header, before Flavien Tait fired home a glorious equaliser after 23 minutes. It was the hosts who stayed on top for the remainder of the half but Spurs did well to manage the game and keep the two sides level at the break.

The second half got off to a scrappy start as Lucas Moura's attempts to play on with an ankle injury led to a few stoppages. The Brazilian couldn't continue and left the pitch to join Steven Bergwijn, who went off with his own injury earlier in the game.

Rennes got themselves back ahead when Kamaldeen Sulemana's shot was parried right to the feet of Gaetan Laborde, who tapped home into an empty net, but Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg slotted in an equaliser almost immediately to set up a tense last 15 minutes.

As the clock wound down, it was Rennes who asked most of the questions, but clear-cut chances were at a premium before the referee brought things to a close.

Here's how Spurs got on.

Tottenham player ratings

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Pierluigi Gollini (GK) - 5/10 - Made a handful of decent saves but continues to look a little shaky from distance. Parried a few shots back into dangerous areas.

Matt Doherty (RB) - 3/10 - Just not very good. Beaten far too easily by Sulemana time and time again (including for the second goal) and didn't offer anything going forwards either. Crossing was well below par.

Japhet Tanganga (CB) - 4/10 - He might prefer being a centre-back, but Tanganga doesn't play like a centre-back. Far too weak aerially and was chasing Serhou Guirassy's shadow all night long.

Joe Rodon (CB) - 5/10 - Looked very rusty on his European debut. Showed his inexperience with some poor decisions but slowly looked to be gaining confidence with his passing.

Ben Davies (LB) - 3/10 - Marginally better than Doherty but still stunningly ineffective at both ends of the field. Looked so lethargic with everything he did.

2. Midfielders

Oliver Skipp (DM) - 5/10 - Went full Harry Winks in this one. Poor defensively and far too safe with the ball at his feet, although his sideways passes were usually quite tidy.

Tanguy Ndombele (DM) - 6/10 - A bit of the same from Ndombele on his return. An excellent first 15 minutes and a brilliant flick for Spurs' opener, but disappeared for the rest of the first half. Reignited himself after the break but was soon hauled off.

Steven Bergwijn (RM) - 5/10 - Looked to turn his ankle and had to leave the pitch after half an hour. Might not be seen for a few weeks now.

Lucas Moura (AM) - 6/10 - Had an energetic first half but picked up a nasty ankle injury early in the second half. Tried to continue but soon had to limp off.

Bryan Gil (LM) - 6/10 - Spent time as both a winger and a central midfielder and struggled to find his groove. Impacted the game well centrally but felt a little too isolated on the wing. Grew into things as the game progressed.

3. Forward

Harry Kane (ST) - 6/10 - Some good movement and did his best to get his team-mates involved, but was a little too isolated at times. Needed more help from those around him before being withdrawn shortly after half-time.

4. Substitutes

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (CM) - 6/10 - On to replace the injured Bergwijn. Found himself in some advanced positions and did well to tap Spurs level.

Emerson Royal (RW) - 5/10 - Yep, brought on as a winger. Got himself into some decent positions but looked very much like a defender cosplaying as a forward.

Dane Scarlett (ST) - 5/10 - Put himself around fairly well after replacing Kane but didn't really do anything of note.

Dele Alli (CM) - N/A - Came on late and didn't get a lot of time to do anything.
