Bruno Fernandes scored twice as Manchester United secured an impressive 4-0 win in the away leg of their last 32 Europa League tie against Real Sociedad on Thursday evening.

The opening stages of the game were played at a frantic tempo, with both sides spurning glorious opportunities to take the lead within two minutes.

As the game began to settle it was United who looked the most likely, and they took a deserved lead after some calamitous Sociedad defending allowed Fernandes the chance to tap into an empty net.

Sociedad started the second half brightly but some clinical finishing from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side saw them take complete control of the tie.

Fernandes doubled both his and United's tally for the night with a lovely curling effort, before Marcus Rashford ran through to coolly slot past Alex Remiro.

There was enough time for Daniel James to cap a fine display with a goal as he slotted the ball through the legs of Remiro, with Solskjaer's men taking a commanding lead into the second leg next Thursday.

That's the match highlights done and dusted, now to those United player ratings.

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Dean Henderson (GK) - 7/10 - Looked sharp from the off and was called into action early on by Alexander Isak. Showed conviction whenever he came off his line and was comfortable with the ball at his feet. An impressive performance.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - 6/10 - Looked neat and tidy whenever he stepped up the field and was as dependable in his own half as we've become used to.

Eric Bailly (CB) - 5/10 - Looked like he was towing a caravan as Isak ran past him and nearly opened the scoring in the second minute of the game. Grew into the contest as the minutes ticked by but clearly in need of more game-time.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 6/10 - Took him a bit of time to settle into the game alongside Bailly. Struggled to cope with the pace of Isak but looked much more assured as United took control.

Alex Telles (LB) - 7/10 - Provided width all evening down the United left and looked solid defensively. Would have been expecting a much more taxing evening on his return to the first team but can be pleased with his display.

2. Midfielders

Scott McTominay (CM) - 7/10 - Industrious and combative all evening. Helped drive his side further up the field and knitted the play together in midfield.

Fred (CM) - 7/10 - Mopped up in the middle of the park and produced a beautiful assist for Rashford's goal. After a rocky start to life at Old Trafford his influence on the team is beginning to grow.

Bruno Fernandes (CM) - 9/10 - Absolute filth at times. Moved into a false nine position whenever Rashford moved out wide and bamboozled the Sociedad midfield every time he was on the ball. Bagged himself two goals and was simply too good for the Spanish outfit.

3. Forwards

Mason Greenwood (RW) - 7/10 - In a week when he signed a new deal with the club, the youngster produced an incredibly mature display. Didn't neglect his defensive duties in tracking back and looked dangerous with the ball at his feet.

Marcus Rashford (ST) - 8/10 -
Could have easily had two in the opening 20 minutes but was twice denied by Remiro. Produced a nicely-weighted ball over the top as Fernandes opened the scoring and finally got his goal just past the hour mark. Some lacklustre finishing but on the whole a very good display.

Daniel James (LW) - 7/10 - Grabbed himself an assist after his loose piece of control fell fortunately at the feet of Fernandes. Showed a fantastic desire to work for the good of the team and capped off a good performance with a richly-deserved goal late on.

4. Substitutes

Nemanja Matic - 5/10

Anthony Martial - 6/10

Juan Mata - 6/10

Amad Diallo - 6/10
