The 2023/24 Supercopa de Espana final will be contested by Barcelona and Real Madrid, and it won't be the first time El Clasico has taken place in the competition.

The Spanish Super Cup has undergone a huge number of changes over the years, with the format being altered on multiple occasions, but one constant that has remained has been the presence of the nation's two biggest clubs.

Since 2020, they've had to win a semi-final first to get the chance to lift the trophy, as both managed to do this year with Real Madrid beating Atletico Madrid after extra-time and Barcelona conquering Osasuna in Saudi Arabia.

As a result, they'll face one another in the final again - here's how such clashes have panned out in the past.

Back when the Supercopa de Espana final took place over two legs, Barcelona and Real Madrid regularly met home and away in the competition. That was certainly the case in 1997, although it was the side from the Spanish capital who would have the last laugh.

Barcelona took a first-leg advantage to the Santiago Bernabeu, goals from Miguel Angel Nadal and Giovanni giving the Catalan club a 2-1 lead. However, Madrid would produce an emphatic display in the second leg, roaring back to lift the Supercopa.

Raul gave the hosts the lead just before the break, latching on to Aitor Karanka's lofted through ball and sliding beyond Ruud Hesp. The Spanish sharpshooter would quickly double his tally after half-time, producing another sublime and calm finish in front of the home crowd.

Predrag Mijatovic would give Madrid a third, with Clarence Seedorf racing in behind the Barcelona backline and adding a fourth to secure victory. Giovanni would manage to pull one back for the visitors, but it wouldn't be enough to deny Jupp Heynckes' Madrid another Supercopa de Espana title.

Having somehow gone 14 years without meeting in the Supercopa de Espana, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho would clash for the first time in the competition. They were two fiery encounters in 2011, with Madrid's Portuguese manager even jabbing Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova in the eye during a feisty touchline brawl.

The first leg between the two sides finished 2-2, Lionel Messi producing a goal and an assist at the Bernabeu in a delightful performance. The Argentine was on hand to provide more magical moments in the return fixture at the Camp Nou, Barcelona winning the tie 3-2 to lift the Supercopa for a third straight season.

Barca started the game on top and it took them just a quarter-of-an-hour to take the lead. Andres Iniesta was released by Messi's inch-perfect through ball, the midfielder then applying a deft chipped finish to put the hosts ahead. That lead lasted just five minutes though, Cristiano Ronaldo converting Karim Benzema's cross shortly afterwards.

Messi was there to put Barca back in front just before the break, producing another sublime chip beyond Iker Casillas following Gerard Pique's excellent backheel. However, Benzema once again pegged the hosts back, finishing off a scramble in the box from a corner with eight minutes to play.

It looked as if the game would be heading to extra-time, but Messi had other ideas. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner played a lovely one-two with Adriano, eventually slamming home his teammate's cross from ten yards out to earn Barcelona yet another piece of silverware.

In the revamped Supercopa de Espana in which four teams compete, Barcelona and Real Madrid actually clashed in the semi-final of the tournament in 2022. Nothing could separate the two Spanish giants across the 90 minutes, but extra-time would prove pivotal.

Vinicius Junior would give Madrid the lead after 25 minutes, the Brazilian unleashing a wonderful outside of the boot effort to catch out Marc-Andre ter Stegen at his near post. Luuk de Jong did level before half-time with an incredibly fortuitous effort, Eder Militao simply slamming his clearance off the outstretched leg of the Dutch forward.

Benzema would restore Madrid's lead with an instinctive penalty box finish, but Ansu Fati's near-post header would send the game to extra-time. However, Federico Valverde would produce a winner in the 97th minute, Rodrygo setting up the Uruguayan following a lovely counter-attack.

Having made the final, Madrid would go on to beat Athletic Club 2-0 to claim a 12th Supercopa crown.
