Real Madrid Unable to Pay Bonuses in Event of La Liga & Champions League Triumphs

Real Madrid's players and coaching staff will not receive any bonuses even if they win La Liga and/or the Champions League this season - with this agreement being reached as part of the decision to reduce salaries.

The financial impacts of the coronavirus pandemic have been well-documented in recent weeks and months, and it has been no different for Real Madrid. The club confirmed in April that players and coaches had agreed to wage cuts of around 10%. This would have risen to 20% had the current campaign in Spain's top flight been cancelled - but, of course, this hasn't happened.

But MARCA now report that as part of that agreement, the players and coaching staff agreed to abandon plans to hand out bonuses in the event of Real winning any domestic or European trophies. As a result, should Los Blancos go on and win La Liga and/or the Champions League this season, the players and staff will not be entitled to anything outside of their base salary.

The report provides context to indicate how much the players and staff will be missing out on, with it being noted that the Real squad - who stormed to La Liga and Champions League glory during the 2016/17 season - picked up bonuses of around €1m.

It is said that the players were inclined to accept the proposal as they were fully aware of the financial constraints placed on the club.

Manager Zinedine Zidane couldn't have hoped for a better start since play got back underway again, with his side winning all six of their matches since the resumption. During this time, they have netted 12 goals, also keeping four clean sheets.

This form has seen Real open up a four-point lead over Barcelona at the top of La Liga, with La Blaugrana struggling under Quique Setien.

In the Champions League, Real have it all to do in the second leg of their last 16 against Manchester City - needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit at the Etihad Stadium in order to progress.
