Karim Benzema has signed a one-year contract extension which will keep him at Real Madrid until 2023.

Benzema has been in incredible form since Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in 2018, scoring 20+ goals in each of the following three La Liga seasons and also registering 24 assists. He has been a near ever present in the side too, missing just seven league matches in three years.

The France international has started the current campaign in the same manner, grabbing a brace in Los Blancos’ opening day victory over Alaves last week.

There has been speculation over his future for some time as he was one of many top players whose contract expired next summer. However, he has since extended his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu by a further year. This should take Benzema into his 14th year with Real.

The news of his new contract comes just days after similar agreements were reached with Dani Carvajal and Thibaut Courtois. This means that Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Isco are now the only senior players who could choose to walk away for free at the end of the season.

Real are planning for several high-profile new arrivals next summer. Long term target Kylian Mbappe is at the top of their wish list, as is Man Utd's Paul Pogba. Both players are out of contract in July but Paris Saint-Germain are eager to pen terms with both.

Because of this, Real have been oddly quiet in the current transfer window. They have only made one signing with David Alaba joining on a free transfer after his Bayern Munich contract expired.

There have been a few notable departures, though. Sergio Ramos has joined PSG following the expiration of his contract, while long-time centre-back partner Raphael Varane has signed for Manchester United and Martin Odegaard has joined Arsenal.
