Real Madrid have confirmed that star winger Eden Hazard is set for another spell on the sidelines, having suffered an injury to his right thigh.

The 29-year-old endured a torrid first season in the Spanish capital, making only 16 La Liga appearances following his big-money move from Chelsea in the summer of 2019. He missed a huge portion of the season with a broken foot which he suffered before Christmas, and then continued to pick up minor knocks and injuries throughout the campaign.

Hazard will have been desperate for a fresh start at Santiago Bernabeu this season, but these dreams have already been scuppered, after Madrid announced that the Belgian star has suffered a thigh injury and will be out for an undetermined period of time.

"After the tests carried out today on our player Eden Hazard by Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in his right leg," the club announced.

Los Blancos shelled out around €100m for Hazard last summer, and many were expecting one of the Premier League's finest imports to light up Spain in similar fashion. It hasn't worked out at all for the forward however, who failed to put together a serious string of performances, and struggled to find form when on the pitch.

The ex-Chelsea star scored only once for los Merengues in the league last season, with the goal coming in a 4-2 victory over Granada at the beginning of October. Almost a year on, he finds himself stuck on the same tally, having been restricted to making only 12 more domestic appearances for Zinedine Zidane's side.

It was a successful season for Madrid without Hazard's influence, as they went on to knock Barcelona off La Liga's perch, claiming a hard-fought league title in the final weeks of the campaign.
