Real Madrid have confirmed that young midfielder Arda Guler has undergone arthroscopic knee surgery.

Madrid fended off interest from arch rivals Barcelona this summer to sign 18-year-old starlet Guler from Fenerbahce, with the player himself choosing the capital club after both club bid around £17m for his services.

Unfortunately the youngster suffered a knee injury during pre-season training with his new club in the USA prior to a game against AC Milan and was subsequently ruled out of the friendly clash with Manchester United as well before he was sent back to Madrid for tests.

Those tests have led to Guler going under the knife, with the club confirming a procedure was required on Monday morning.

"Our player Arda Guler underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today under the supervision of the Real Madrid Medical Services," a statement read. "Guler will begin his recovery process in the next few days."

While knee surgery sounds worrying, speaking recently to the press manager Carlo Ancelotti insisted he does not expect to be without Guler for long.

"The recovery time is very short," he said. "Arda’s problem is very small and I think he can recover very soon."

Guler is one of a number of Real Madrid players who have gone down with injuries recently, although the youngster's is by far the least serious of the lot. In the last week Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao have both been ruled out for the majority of the 2023/24 season due to ACL injuries.

Courtois suffered his in training on Thursday last week, while Militao went down during Madrid's opening day win over Athletic Club. Los Blancos have already signed a replacement goalkeeper in Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan to help cope with the loss of Courtois.
