Real Madrid 2-2 Sevilla: Player ratings as Los Blancos lose ground in La Liga title race

A late, late own goal was only enough to rescue a point for Real Madrid against Sevilla as Zinedine Zidane's men lost ground in La Liga's title race at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano on Sunday night.

Karim Benzema thought he had given Real the lead with a simple header 12 minutes in, but the strike was very swiftly ruled out by VAR for an offside against Alvaro Odriozola in the build-up - so swiftly that even the commentators didn't realise.

Ten minutes later, Sevilla had the lead; defensive midfielder Fernando found himself with far too much space in the Madrid penalty area and fired low past Thibaut Courtois.

Without really threatening, Real found an equalised midway through the second half after Vinicius Junior had missed a sitter. Toni Kroos kept his cool wonderfully on the edge of the penalty area to find substitute Marco Asensio in space, who fired home first time.

However, their parity was short-lived as Ivan Rakitic restored the Sevillistas lead from the spot following a classic bit of VAR drama. Los Blancos counterattacked to devastating effect from a Sevilla corner and Benzema was felled by Bono for a stonewall penalty - only for a spot kick to be awarded the other way after a clear handball from the initial set piece by Eder Militao.

The hosts left it until the death to snatch a point, with Kroos' long-range effort taking a wicked deflection off Diego Carlos and flying beyond Bono with 94 minutes on the clock. The result leaves Real in second place in La Liga, two points behind leaders and city rivals Atletico Madrid.

REAL MADRID PLAYER RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Thibaut Courtois (GK) - 6/10 - Didn't have much to do, and not much he could have done about either Sevilla goal as he was let down by his defence.

Alvaro Odriozola (RB) - 7/10 - A thorn in the side of the visitors early on, but faded in the second half. Attacking intent was always there.

Eder Militao (CB) - 6/10 - Made a couple of excellent early challenges, exhibiting his pace and strength in the channel. Flapped an arm out to concede the costly penalty following a VAR check.

Nacho (CB) - 5/10 - One of a number of Madrid players who looked tired and slightly nervy on the night, taking too many touches and sometimes wasting possession.

Marcelo (LB) - 5/10 - Nowhere near his best and seemed to pick up yet another knock before being withdrawn in the second half.

2. Midfielders

Luka Modric (CM) - 6/10 - Not really able to influences the game in the first period. Saw a rasping left-footed drive fumbled round the post by Bono early in the second. Subbed.

Casemiro (DM) - 6/10 - Probably the worst offender amid some awful defending for Sevilla's opener, failing to get close to Fernando in the box. Fired a shot narrowly wide later in the first half. Looked ponderous and tired after a gruelling shift in midweek. Booked. Planted a shot just wide with basically the last kick of the game.

Toni Kroos (CM) - 8/10 - Reaffirmed his importance to this team. Sublimely cool assist from the edge of the box for Asensio's equaliser. Forced the second leveller at the death with a deflected shot from range, given as an own goal. Clutch.

3. Forwards

Fede Valverde (RW) - 5/10 - Forced to defend early on by the troublesome Marcos Acuña. Bit of a square peg in a round hole shunted out wide.

Karim Benzema (CF) - 7/10 - Typically dangerous. Made a dazzling run down the left shortly before seeing a headed goal ruled out by VAR. Stung Bono's fingertips later in the first half. Started drifting left late one which diminished his threat.

Vinicius Junior (LW) - 6/10 - Some wonderful dribbling early on, but questions over his end product will persist. Missed a glaring opportunity in the second half, mis-kicking and hitting the post from six yards out.

4. Substitutes

Marco Asensio - 8/10 - Made an immediate impact, squeezing a first-time shot inside the post from the angle.

Miguel Gutierrez - 5/10 - Struggled to get involved.

Eden Hazard - 6/10 - Played a part in forcing the late own goal.
