RB Leipzig 1-4 Bayern Munich: Player ratings as Die Roten earn crucial win

Bayern Munich earned a resounding 4-1 win at RB Leipzig on Saturday evening, as Julian Nagelsmann's men made it three wins and a draw to start their Bundesliga campaign.

The hosts started the game brighter, although it was Bayern that broke the deadlock following a VAR review. Kevin Kampl was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area, allowing the unflappable Robert Lewandowski to coolly convert from the penalty spot on 12 minutes.

It took the visitors just two minutes of the second half to double their lead. Alphonso Davies's cross into the area was brought down beautifully by substitute Jamal Musiala, who lashed the ball into the far bottom corner past a helpless Peter Gulacsi with his first two touches of the ball.

RB Leipzig responded well and thought they'd pulled one back on 51 minutes when Andre Silva broke through and finished with aplomb past the onrushing Manuel Neuer, only for VAR to call the Portuguese offside.

Bayern then extended their lead in the 54th minute. Musiala was once again central, forcing his way to the byline and crossing to the back post for Leroy Sane to tap into an empty net.

Leipzig did eventually find their way to goal just four minutes later, when Konrad Laimer picked up Kampl's pass before unleashing a vicious strike from around 25 yards, sending it right into the top corner.

Bayern remained in the ascendancy, however, and managed to add another in stoppage time. Joshua Kimmich slipped a clever ball through the Leipzig defence, allowing unmarked substitute Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to calmly slot past Gulacsi.

The 4-1 win piles on the concern for Leipzig, who have commenced the season with three defeats in their opening four, while Bayern move up to second with ten points from a possible 12. Now, let's see how the players rated.

RB LEIPZIG PLAYER RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Peter Gulacsi (GK) - 6/10 - Came up with a couple of brilliant stops to deny Lewandowski and Marcel Sabitzer, but eventually powerless to the three strikes that beat him.

Nordi Mukiele (RB) - 5/10 - Strong in the first half, making five interventions, but seemed to disappear after the interval, allowing far too much space down the left for Bayern.

Willi Orban (CB) - 6/10 - Positioned himself well and read the game crucially for the most part, making two recoveries and five clearances. Wasn't helped by weak defending from the flanks.

Mohamed Simakan (CB) - 5/10 - Comfortable enough when faced up with his opponents, largely proving dominant in individual battles and making five recoveries, but was tentative in possession and was a bit of a liability at times. Put to the sword by Musiala in the build-up to Bayern's third.

Angelino (LB) - 5/10 - Got up the flank very well and found himself in fantastic positions in the final third but was completely wasteful, failing to register a key pass.

2. Midfielders

Konrad Laimer (CM) - 6/10 - What a goal. Practically absent throughout, but came up with a stunning strike to find a way past Neuer. Replaced seconds after that moment of magic - go figure.

Kevin Kampl (CM) - 6/10 - Tenacious and destructive in the engine room, recovering the ball five times. A silly handball early on proved costly for his side, however.

Dani Olmo (AM) - 6/10 - Leipzig's brightest threat for the majority, showing gorgeously silky feet and good vision to drive his side upfield on numerous occasions. Unlucky to see a brilliant effort sensationally tipped over the bar in first-half stoppage time.

3. Forwards

Christopher Nkunku (RW) - 5/10 - Good energy and movement but, like most of his colleagues, just lacked an end product to really worry Bayern.

Andre Silva (ST) - 5/10 - Cut a frustrated figure throughout, failing to get a footing in the game up against the physically dominant Dayot Upamecano. Unlucky to have his strike disallowed, although was otherwise constantly shut down.

Dominik Szoboszlai (LW) - 5/10 - Found himself in some good positions in advanced areas, although never looked totally confident in what he had planned for his next move and rarely threatened.

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Manuel Neuer (GK) - 7/10 - Alert to what was in front of him, rushing out well while also making a notably brilliant stop from a Szoboszlai effort in the first period.

Benjamin Pavard (RB) - 6/10 - Had a shaky start and didn't look all that up to speed on his return from injury. Defensively sound, but lacked that usual creativity when surging upfield.

Dayot Upamecano (CB) - 7/10 - A bully in the best possible way. Had his opposition under wraps throughout, always staying tight and marshalling runners to perfection on his return to Leipzig.

Lucas Hernandez (CB) - 7/10 - Enjoyed a good return from the sidelines, stepping out from the back to good effect and staying alert in his own area to make a couple of vital interventions in front of goal.

Alphonso Davies (LB) - 7/10 - Made some great darts upfield and eventually found an assist for his side's second. Had a good defensive game, as well, registering four tackles.

6. Midfielders

Joshua Kimmich (CM) - 7/10 - Characteristically calm and collected when distributing the ball from deep and setting his team away, and grabbed an assist late on to set up Choupo-Moting for Die Roten's fourth.

Leon Goretzka (CM) - 7/10 - An injection of dynamism into the Bayern midfield, marauding up and down the pitch to influence both ends. Important in breaking up play in front of the back four, while also making some brilliant surges into the final third.

Thomas Muller (AM) - 6/10 - Floated around and saw a lot of possession, although couldn't quite find his typical killer pass. Impressive reading of play, however, tracking back and nicking the ball for his side several times.

7. Forwards

Serge Gnabry (RW) - 7/10 - Showed some lovely touches on the ball and was elusive for the opposition defence until forced off with injury just before the break.

Robert Lewandowski (ST) - 7/10 - Didn't receive too much service but still found a goal via the penalty spot. That's eight in five for Bayern this campaign. Scary.

Leroy Sane (LW) - 7/10 - Had some electric moments when dribbling towards the Leipzig defence and came away with a goal courtesy of a simple tap in to make it 3-0.

8. Substitutes

Jamal Musiala (RW) - 8/10 - So tricky, so intelligent, so fantastic to watch. Remarkable impact after his introduction, scoring his side's second and assisted their third brilliantly.

Marcel Sabitzer (CM) - 6/10 - Solid but unsensational on his return to his former club. Not popular with the home fans.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (ST) - 7/10 - Finished well to round off the scoring.
