Every game played at Euro 2020 - ranked
A year later than planned, Euro 2020 is done.
51 matches were played in 11 host cities right across Europe in a unique concept and the action on the pitch rarely disappointed, with amazing goals and great excitement.
Here's a look at every match in the competition, ranked from worst to best.
51. Denmark 0-1 Finland
Group B: 12 June
The game that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons after Denmark star Christian Eriksen went into cardiac arrest and collapsed shortly before half-time. It could have been fatal but for the quick reaction of his teammates, match officials and medical staff.
Once Eriksen was stable in hospital, the game resumed, supposedly at the request of the Danish players. But it should never have been allowed to go on and several within the Danish camp later said they weren’t really given a lot of choice but to continue.
50. Spain 0-0 Sweden
Group E: 14 June
Few chances and disappointing finishing saw the clash between Spain and Sweden finish 0-0. The Spaniards passed the ball to death from start to finish but rarely asked meaningful questions of their opponent, who batted the ball away pretty much every time.
Alvaro Morata was guilty of missing a glorious chance for Spain, while Alexander Isak and Marcus Berg both squandered good opportunities for Sweden.
49. Sweden 1-0 Slovakia
Group E: 18 June
Sweden found themselves in only a marginally less poor game in their second Group E fixture than their first, with a narrow 1-0 win over Slovakia secured with a penalty in the 77th minute.
Slovakia, who had been impressive in their opening game against Poland, continue reading for more on that one, failed to muster a shot on target.
48. Czech Republic 0-1 England
Group D: 22 June
There was nothing riding on England's game with Czech Republic in terms of qualification for the knockout stages, with only final placings left to play for at Wembley, and an early goal killed the contest.
England ultimately stayed true to a defence first 'slow and steady wins the race' strategy that had defined their first two games. It was a third clean sheet in a row and Czech Republic only managed one shot on target.
47. Wales 1-1 Switzerland
Group A: 12 June
There was nothing to separate Wales and Switzerland on the second day of the tournament after a Kieffer Moore header cancelled out an earlier Breel Embolo header.
Both teams took a little while to get going and even when they did it was down to individuals like the aforementioned Embolo and Moore to make the differences, rather than a collective effort.
46. England 1-0 Croatia
Group D: 13 June
The pre and post-game narrative focused on England getting revenge on Croatia for the 2018 World Cup semi-final, even if that had arguably already been achieved in the 2018/19 Nations League, but the game itself wasn't anything particularly special.
Croatia were disappointing and there only four shots on target from both teams combined over the course of the 90 minutes.
45. Ukraine 0-1 Austria
Group C: 21 June
Austria made their own history in their third Group C game by reaching the knockout stages of a European Championship tournament for the first time. But they did so against a Ukraine side that put up minimal resistance.
The only goal was scored early by Christoph Baumgartner, although there was an element of controversy over whether he should have been on the pitch following treatment for a head injury shortly before.
44. Spain 1-1 Poland
Group E: 19 June
Spain know they had a golden generation of players firing them to glory between 2008 and 2012, not just because of those successes but also because of how much they're currently struggling.
Luis Enrique's current incarnation look pretty in possession, but a second successive draw of Euro 2020 highlighted their inability to create and finish off chances. Alvaro Morata scored on, but a Robert Lewandowski equaliser and a missed penalty from Gerard Moreno saw this end a tepid draw.
43. Croatia 1-1 Czech Republic
Group D: 18 June
Croatia and Czech Republic's 1-1 draw in Glasgow effectively put the latter into the last 16 with a group game to spare, which might have been a surprise ahead of the tournament.
Both sides had the ball in good attacking areas fairly often, although the shooting was wayward and only three of 22 attempts in total at either end were actually on target.
42. Italy 1-0 Wales
Group A: 20 June
Italy made it a perfect group stage by winning against Wales to take the maximum nine points and underline their status as early favourites to go on and win the whole thing.
Defeat mattered not for Wales, who had Ethan Ampadu sent off early in the second half as they finished second in group A regardless. Italy's dominance wasn't really reflected by the narrow nature of the win.
41. England 0-0 Scotland
Group D: 18 June
England vastly underwhelmed in a game that should have represented a comfortable win on home soil. But the fact that it was Scotland, in a major tournament, gave the intriguing contest a real edge.
England played below themselves and Harry Kane's total lack of impact epitomised their night. Scotland, on the other hand, were hyped up for it and controlled their emotions better than they did in their opening match.
40. Finland 0-2 Belgium
Group B: 21 June
Belgium dominated possession and created chances in their final Group B game against Finland but it wasn't until a fortunate 74th minute own goal from Finnish goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky that they took the lead.
Finland looked like they were running on fumes for large parts of the game after huge efforts in their previous two fixtures. Defeat ultimately saw them slip to third in the standings and get knocked out.
39. North Macedonia 0-3 Netherlands
Group C: 21 June
An easy 3-0 win over North Macedonia in Amsterdam on matchday three of the group stage gave Netherlands maximum points. The Dutch dominated possession and have seven shots on target without really being tested.
North Macedonia only had one shot on target and never got close to causing an upset once Memphis Depay had put Netherlands into a first half lead. Georginio Wijnaldum scored twice soon after half-time.
38. Netherlands 2-0 Austria
Group C: 17 June
Netherlands were never really threatened by Austria in the second round of matches in Group C. Wing-back Denzel Dumfries emerged as the hero for the Dutch, winning a penalty and later scoring himself.
Frenkie de Jong and Georginio Wijnaldum also impressed for the home side in Amsterdam, while Austria were a bit of a disappointment.
37. Belgium 3-0 Russia
Group B: 12 June
Belgium looked impressive as they flexed their muscles with a 3-0 win over Russia to kick off their campaign. It was a relatively comfortable evening for the highest ranked side in the tournament, with Russia just a shadow of the team they had been in 2018.
Romelu Lukaku scored twice, one goal in either half, dedicating his first to Inter teammate Christian Eriksen, whose collapse while playing for Denmark had happened only a couple of hours earlier.
36. Finland 0-1 Russia
Group B: 16 June
Despite a low score-line, Russia's win over Finland in Group B was an intriguing watch and could easily have gone either way.
Finland did have the ball in the net through Joel Pohjanpalo but it was ruled out for offside. There was also fine defensive work, while Aleksei Miranchuk's winner in first half stoppage time was delightfully precise.
35. Hungary 1-1 France
Group F: 19 June
After comfortably seeing off Germany in their opening group game, France were expected to go to Budapest and take maximum points away from Hungary with ease.
Trouble is, they perhaps hadn't factored in a baking hot day, raucous atmosphere and a home side really up for the fight. Attila Fiola's cracking goal could only be cancelled out by Antoine Griezmann in the second half, earning the hosts a valuable point.
34. Scotland 0-2 Czech Republic
Group D: 14 June
Scotland’s first tournament game in 23 years took place in front of just under 10,000 fans at Hampden Park and the build-up, including the Scottish anthem, was an emotional one.
Sadly for the Scots, the game included one of the best goals you’re ever likely to see at a European Championship tournament when Czech Republic striker Patrik Schick scored an incredible effort from the halfway line, immediately making a meme of Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall.
33. Sweden 1-2 Ukraine (aet)
Last 16: 29 June
Ukraine had to wait until stoppage time of extra-time to secure first ever European Championship knockout win, with striker Artem Dovbyk finding the perfect moment to score his first international goal.
The game had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes but extra-time was largely a non-entity with no real rhythm as a result of numerous substitutions and the red card shown to Sweden defender Marcus Danielson.
32. Poland 1-2 Slovakia
Group E: 14 June
Poland disappointed and Slovakia impressed in a game that was widely expected to go the other way. Slovakia were the better team in the first half, with forwards Robert Mak and Ondrej Duda causing particular problems, but a different Poland emerged after half-time.
The instant equaliser prompted 15 minutes of Polish pressure, before Grzegorz Krychowiak was sent off and the power balance shifted again.
31. Ukraine 2-1 North Macedonia
Group C: 17 June
First half goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk gave Ukraine all three points against North Macedonia, who were far from embrassed in a relatively even contest.
Ezgjan Alioski scored the rebound from his own saved penalty to get the Macedonians back into it. A late penalty miss from Ruslan Malinovsky ultimately didn't matter for Ukraine.
30. Croatia 3-1 Scotland
Group D: 22 June
Another Scotland game, another contender for goal of the tournament scored against them. This time it was a stunning effort from Croatia legend Luka Modric with the outside of his boot from the edge of the box.
Scotland had a good chance to qualify for the knockout stages, which added plenty of intrigue. But it was Modric, whose goal proved decisive after an earlier Callum McGregor equalised, that pulled strings throughout.
29. Hungary 0-3 Portugal
Group F: 15 June
Portugal left it late to beat Hungary in what threatened to be a hostile environment for the visitors in Budapest, but a trio of goals in the closing stages saw one of the favourites to lift the trophy get off to a winning start.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored two of Portugal’s goals. His first of the game was his 10th in European Championship tournaments, breaking Michel Platini’s longstanding record that had stood since 1984. He then extended his own new record to 11.
28. England 2-0 Germany
Last 16: 29 June
England finally ended their long wait for a tournament win over Germany, with Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane scoring second half goals in a momentous win that had been 55 years in the making.
The game was generally better in the second half and Germany gave it plenty. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had to be on top of his game and Thomas Muller missed a glaring opportunity when it was only 1-0.
27. Belgium 1-0 Portugal
Last 16: 27 June
Following a cagey opening 40 minutes, Belgium's last 16 clash with holders Portugal stirred into life after a stunning goal from Thorgan Hazard broke the deadlock short before half-time.
Portugal dominated possession and peppered the Belgian goal with 23 shots on and off target. Ruben Dias brought a strong save out of Thibaut Courtois, while Raphael Guerreiro hit the post, but Belgium held on.
26. Austria 3-1 North Macedonia
Group C: 13 June
An excellent opening goal from Austria’s Stefan Lainer, and North Macedonia’s first goal in their first appearance at a major tournament from national hero Goran Pandev, made for a strong first half from the clash in Bucharest.
Austria prevailed with two goals late on, although the game was marred by accusations of Marko Arnautovic using racist language towards two Macedonian players during his celebration.
25. Netherlands 0-2 Czech Republic
Last 16: 27 June
Netherlands weren't really tested in a quite straightforward group and it showed in the last 16 when they came unstuck against a Czech Republic side that had flown a little under the radar prior to kick-off.
VAR intervened early in the second half to upgrade a yellow card shown to Matthijs de Ligt for handball to red and that gave the Czechs the upper hand. Tomas Holes and Patrik Schick then scored the decisive goals.
24. Portugal 2-2 France
Group F: 23 June
Karim Benzema scored his first two international goals since 2015 as France drew 2-2 with Portugal to round off their group stage. Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice from the penalty spot.
There wasn't a great deal at stake here and a draw suited both teams in the end. Indeed, the last few minutes of stoppage time was played out with no action because each knew they were going through.
23. Czech Republic 1-2 Denmark
Quarter-finals: 3 July
Denmark's tactical strength and organisation translated into a quarter-final win over Czech Republic, with Thomas Delaney heading the Danes into an early lead that was ultimately never relinquished.
Kasper Dolberg made it 2-0 before half-time and an impressive fifth goal of Euro 2020 for Czech striker Patrik Schick wasn't enough to derail the developing fairytale.
22. Slovakia 0-5 Spain
Group E: 23 June
The quietly impressive Slovakia seen in their first two games disappeared when they encountered Spain on matchday three of Group E. La Roja, meanwhile, finally got going but were helped by a poor opponent.
Errors rather than quality made this one quite entertaining, with Martin Dubravka saving an early penalty from Alvaro Morata and then turning villain when he later punched the ball into his own net to give Spain the lead.
21. Italy 3-0 Switzerland
Group A: 16 June
Italy crushed a limp Switzerland with a strong performance in their second group game in front of their own fans in Roma, with Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli the standout player for the impressive Azzurri.
Locatelli scored twice on the night, once in either half. His all-round performance was excellent, but his second goal low into the bottom corner from outside the penalty area was a particular highlight.
20. Wales 0-4 Denmark
Last 16: 26 June
Every neutral fan in every Denmark game is behind the Danes this summer after what happened to Christian Eriksen in their opening game. Ironically, Wales were the neutral's favourites at Euro 2016.
Denmark were tactically superb and well drilled throughout. But Wales had started well, Kasper Dolberg's opening goal was a hammer blow they never recovered from and the Welsh eventually collapsed in the closing stages.
19. France 1-0 Germany
Group F: 15 June
France gave the impression that was still plenty more to give as they beat Germany 1-0 in Munich in their opening game of the competition. A solitary own goal from Mats Hummels decided it, but the French were still the superior side and were well worth the win.
Kylian Mbappe scored what would have been a glorious second goal for France that was ruled out as he had strayed marginally offside before receiving the ball.
18. Switzerland 1-1 Spain (1-3 on penalties)
Quarter-finals: 2 July
Spain dominated the ball and had close to shots at goal against Switzerland but struggled to see off a resilient opponent who finished the regulation 90 minutes with 10 players and held on through extra-time to penalties.
Both teams had chances to score more than one goal each and Spain could easily have been punished for their wastefulness on another day. But when it came to it, the Swiss ultimately crumbled from 12 yards.
17. Denmark 1-2 Belgium
Group B: 17 June
Five days after watching Christian Eriksen fight for his life on the pitch, Denmark came out of the blocks on fire and took the lead early in their second Group B game against a top Belgium side.
For a while, viewers were left thinking if this was a fairytale in the making. But then the Belgian cavalry arrived, with Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard coming off the bench to turn the class factor up a notch.
16. Ukraine 0-4 England
Quarter-finals: 3 July
England turned up the heat in their quarter-final against Ukraine and scored as many goals over 90 minutes as they had over the previous 360 combined in earlier games at the tournament.
Ukraine didn't put up much of a fight, having overachieved just to reach the last eight, but England were efficient and clinical, with two goals from Harry Kane and one each from Harry Maguire and Raheem Sterling.
15. Turkey 0-3 Italy
Group A: 11 June
Even though it is the first pan-continental European Championship finals, Italy delivered a perfect opening ceremony made more poignant by the year’s delay and everything that has happened globally due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Andrea Bocelli’s rendition of Nessun Dorma was sensational, while social media was blown away by the tiny car that took the ball onto the pitch. It all added to the spectacle as a whole and the game itself wasn’t bad either.
14. Russia 1-4 Denmark
Group B: 21 June
Everyone is an honorary Denmark fan this summer after the horrors of their first game when Cristian Eriksen was fighting for his life on the pitch and it was delightful to see an emphatic win here to secure a knockout place.
Andreas Christensen's screamer was the pick of the goals, making it 3-1 soon after Russia had threatened to get back into the game. The group was so tight that Russia fell from second to fourth as a result of the loss.
13. Switzerland 3-1 Turkey
Group A: 20 June
It was do or die for both of these teams in the final group game following a disappointing start to their respective Euro 2020 campaigns, but Switzerland won a contest that saw plenty of goal-mouth action for each.
All four goals were really good, while Switzerland also had goalkeeper Yann Sommer to thank for a top performance in largely keeping Turkey at bay. Steven Zuber also got a hat-trick of assists.
12. Italy 2-1 Austria (aet)
Last 16: 26 June
Italy were big favourites ahead of this one after storming the group stage, yet Austria matched them for 90 minutes and even threatened to cause an upset, with only a marginal offside call ruling out a Marko Arnautovic goal.
The risk of an historic shock meant you could never take your eyes off it and it took a moment of magic from Federico Chiesa in extra-time to break through. Matteo Pessina made it 2-0 but there was still chance for a late Austrian comeback when Sasa Kalajdzic pulled one back.
11. Italy 1-1 England (3-2 on penalties)
Final: 11 July
Finals always have the potential to be cagey and dull affairs, but Italy and England put on a show of the highest quality at Wembley. The latter taking an early lead through Luke Shaw probably helped in that respect.
Italy eventually came back to equalise, yet there was never a moment when the excitement of the contest appeared to be petering out. There were chances and good saves, while the penalties provided high drama.
10. Netherlands 3-2 Ukraine
Group C: 13 June
In what was their first tournament game since the 2014 World Cup, the Netherlands avoided a comeback scare against Ukraine in a five-goal thriller in their opening game in Amsterdam.
Even the goalless first half had provided plenty of excitement, with both teams attacking and creating chances. The Dutch raced into a 2-0 lead early in the second half, only to be pegged back by two quick-fire Ukraine goals. Denzel Dumfries then won it late on for the home side.
9. Turkey 0-2 Wales
Group A: 16 June
After securing a commendable draw against Switzerland in their opening group game, Wales knew that they needed another big performance against Turkey to further their chances of escaping Group A.
Not only did Robert Page's boys get the job done, they did so in exhilarating style - goals from Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts rendering Gareth Bale's second half penalty miss irrelevant.
8. England 2-1 Denmark (aet)
Semi-finals: 7 July
The country that was trying to reach a first tournament final in 55 years against the country on a fairytale mission. Both desperately wanted it and both tried everything in a pulsing atmosphere at Wembley.
Denmark took the lead with an excellent Mikkel Damsgaard free-kick, but England were well worth their equaliser. Both goalkeepers made good saves and the jeopardy of extra-time brought the defining moment as Harry Kane tidied up the rebound from his penalty denied by Kasper Schmeichel.
7. Belgium 1-2 Italy
Quarter-finals: 2 July
There were only three goal in Italy's quarter-final win over Belgium, but it was a heavyweight clash between two very good teams with genuine hopes of lifting the trophy and didn't disappoint.
Italy scored two very impressive first half goals through Nicolo Barella and Lorenzo Insigne, before Romelu Lukaku pulled one back from the penalty spot. Particular praise belonged to Belgian teenager Jeremy Doku and Italian centre-backs Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.
6. Germany 2-2 Hungary
Group F: 23 June
Defeat against Hungary would have meant Germany unthinkably exiting a second successive major tournament at the group stage. It was unlikely in Munich and yet it very nearly happened.
Hungary took an early lead through Adam Szalai and then went ahead in the second half almost immediately after Kai Havertz had equalised for the Germans, who then threw everything at the goal to draw level again.
5. Sweden 3-2 Poland
Group E: 23 June
Sweden's first two games at Euro 2020 were pretty dull affairs, yet their third was nothing of the sort as they edged Poland 3-2 in a five-goal thriller that saw the Swedes top Group E and the Poles go home.
Poland needed to win to progress but were up against it when Sweden took a 2-0 lead by the hour mark. Then Robert Lewandowski roared into life, only for the Swedes to eventually snatch it in stoppage time.
4. Italy 1-1 Spain (4-2 on penalties)
Semi-finals: 6 July
Football doesn't always have to be full of goals to be incredibly entertaining, with Italy and Spain providing a fine example of that in the first semi-final. Both teams made each other work so hard to be still be in with a chance of reaching the final after 120 minutes of exhausting action.
Federico Chisea scored a sublime opener that was cancelled out by Alvaro Morata. Yet it was Morata who emerged as the villain for Spain when his weak penalty was easily saved in the shootout, proving decisive.
3. Portugal 2-4 Germany
Group F: 19 June
After losing their opening game in the so-called 'group of death', Germany needed to prove a number of doubters wrong against Portugal.
After an quarter of hour, things weren't really going to plan on that front - Cristiano Ronaldo having opened the scoring with a record-extending 12th goal in European Championship competition.
But Joachim Low's side fought back superbly, and inspired by the genius performances of Joshua Kimmich and Robin Gosens at wing-back, Germany blasted their way back into Euro 2020.
Two own goals, a Kai Havertz strike and Gosens header later, it was job done for Die Mannschaft in what was a throughly entertaining game in Munich.
2. Croatia 3-5 Spain (aet)
Last 16: 28 June
Having scored five in their final group game against Slovakia, Spain scored five again in the last 16, but only because Croatia had forced them into extra-time after a pulsating 3-3 draw in 90 minutes.
Croatia went ahead through a bizarre own goal when Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon mis-controlled a back pass, although Spanish goals either side of half-time turned the score-line on its head, before Ferran Torres looked to have made it sure at 3-1 with just over 10 minutes left.
Croatia refused to back down and substitute Mislav Orsic scored and assisted in the closing stages to make it 3-3. But that was where their energy seemed to run out and Spain sub Dani Olmo got two quick-fire assists in extra-time to see La Roja through.
1. France 3-3 Switzerland (4-5 on penalties)
Last 16: 28 June
Switzerland dumped pre-tournament favourites France out of the tournament following a stunning 3-3 draw in 90 minutes and managing to hold their nerve through extra-time to win on penalties.
A potential upset was on the cards early when Haris Seferovic put the Swiss ahead, but they missed the chance to double that lead from the penalty spot and France scored three unanswered goals through Karim Benzema (2) and Paul Pogba to put a foot firmly in the last eight.
Yet Switzerland weren't down and out, pulling back two goals in the final 10 minutes to draw level and sensationally force extra-time. In the shootout, nine penalties were scored until Yann Sommer saved from Kylian Mbappe.
