Paris Saint-Germain returned to top spot in the Ligue 1 table for the first time in two months with an emphatic 4-2 victory over fellow title-hopefuls Lyon.

PSG have spent most of the last few years as runaway leaders in France, but have not had things their own way this season. Lyon have been in the mix, but it is Lille who have spent the majority of this season in top spot.

Lille fell to a surprising 2-1 loss to Nimes earlier on Sunday, opening the door for PSG to move top of the table on goal difference, and that's an opportunity Mauricio Pochettino's side were determined not to pass up.

PSG were overwhelmingly dominant in the first half and roared into the lead after 15 minutes through a smart finish from Kylian Mbappe, and Portuguese midfielder Danilo Pereira offered up some breathing room with a nice volley midway through the half.

Lyon wanted a response after the break but got completely the opposite as PSG netted two more goals inside the first seven minutes.

A free kick from Angel Di Maria somehow found its way through the crowded box and into the back of Anthony Lopes' net, before Mbappe commanded the headlines by finishing off a quick counter to net his 100th goal in Ligue 1.

He became the youngest player in league history to reach the 100-goal mark, doing so in just 142 games.

Unsurprisingly, PSG took their foot off the gas pedal somewhat and ended up shipping two goals to Islam Slimani and Maxwell Cornet, but the damage was already done and PSG managed to see out what could well be the biggest result of their domestic season.

If that wasn't good enough for PSG, they were also blessed with the return of Neymar, who managed 20 minutes off the bench after nine games out through injury.

"It's so important to be top of the table and we are still in all three competitions," Pochettino told PSGTV. "We are so happy as the performance was really good and of course, we expect the team to keep going in this way in the future."
