Premier League results: Gameweek 11

Before bidding farewell to domestic action for another international break, the Premier League treated us to a string of brilliant parting gifts.

Gameweek 11 kicked off with a fun clash between Southampton and Aston Villa, with a rocket from Adam Armstrong earning all three points for the Saints on Friday evening.

The Manchester derby followed on Saturday lunchtime, which City won easily to pile the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, while Chelsea were involved in a surprise result and West Ham stunned Liverpool in East London.

Here's how everything unfolded...

Friday

Southampton 1-0 Aston Villa

A thunderbolt from Adam Armstrong just three minutes in gave Southampton a well-deserved victory over Aston Villa.

Dean Smith watched as his side piled the pressure on with perhaps the worst first half you'll see from any team this season, but their improvement after the break was simply too late and the damage had already been done.

That's five defeats on the bounce for Villa. Can Smith survive this?

Saturday

Man Utd 0-2 Man City

The last knockings for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer?

Manchester United were outclassed by local rivals City in Saturday's early kickoff, going behind early on in comical fashion when Eric Bailly sliced Joao Cancelo's cross into his own net.

While David de Gea put up a fight to try and keep his side in it, more calamitous defending from the hosts allowed Bernardo Silva to sneak in at the back post unchallenged to prod in City's second.

Brentford 1-2 Norwich City

Norwich won a Premier League game for the first time since February 2020 in their visit to Brentford, ending a run of 20 successive top flight games without one.

The Canaries did the damage early in west London, needing only six minutes for Mathias Normann to score the opening goal. The Bees were disappointingly poor and that Norwich was doubled in the first half when Teemu Pukki struck from the penalty spot.

For the second game running, Saman Ghoddos looked good off the bench and he set up a goal for Rico Henry to reduce the deficit. But a consolation was all it was.

Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

Chelsea dropped points in the Premier League for only the third time this season as Burnley rocked up to Stamford Bridge and took a surprise point back to Lancashire.

It looked like it would be business as usual for Chelsea, who finished the game with 25 total shots, when Kai Havertz broke the deadlock in the first half. Reece James got the assist, making it the seventh Premier League goal he has been involved in this season.

But Chelsea missed opportunities to extend their lead, including Thiago Silva hitting the post with a header, and were made to pay for it when Burnley equalised through Matej Vydra late on.

Crystal Palace 2-0 Wolves

Crystal Palace are starting to build some real momentum under Patrick Vieira. This was a sixth consecutive Premier League unbeaten and a second successive win for the Eagles.

Both goals at Selhurst Park came in the second half. Wilfried Zaha got the first, although it needed a VAR review to stand after initially being flagged offside. Conor Gallagher continued his flying start to the season by making it 2-0 with just over 10 minutes left.

Wolves only managed two attempts on target over the 90 minutes, making it a disappointing afternoon for Bruno Lage's team.

Brighton 1-1 Newcastle

Brighton and Newcastle couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes at the Amex Stadium, with the Seagulls and the Magpies sharing the points in a 1-1 draw.

A penalty from Leandro Trossard broke the deadlock in favour of the home side midway through the first half and they dominated both possession and chances. But that counted for little when Isaac Hayden turned the ball in for an equaliser.

Brighton ended the match with 10 players when goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was sent off, forcing centre-back Lewis Dunk to don the gloves in stoppage time.

Sunday

Arsenal 1-0 Watford

Emile Smith Rowe scored the only goal as Arsenal secured a 1-0 win over Watford on Sunday. 

The game was feisty throughout with the Hornets attempting to disrupt their hosts’ rhythm with a series of fouls. 

Bukayo Saka had a goal ruled out for offside and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also missed a penalty in the first period to ensure the teams went in level at half time. Eventually, Arsenal found the breakthrough which proved to be decisive. 

Ben White did well to intercept the ball and drive forward, before it fell kindly for Smith Rowe to stroke home.

Everton 0-0 Tottenham

Tottenham secured a 0-0 draw with Everton at Goodison Park, in what was new manager Antonio Conte’s first Premier League game in charge of the club. 

In a physical contest, both sides missed out on the chance to climb to sixth in the table heading into the international break. 

Everton had a penalty shout waved away by referee Chris Kavanagh in the first half, while Sergio Reguilon blazed over for the visitors. After the break, despite encouragement from the home crowd, the Toffees failed to find a breakthrough.

Leeds 1-1 Leicester

Harvey Barnes netted a wonder strike to give Leicester a 1-1 draw against Leeds at Elland Road. 

In an end-to-end game both sides had chances to open the scoring early on, but it took until the 27th minute for Raphinha to find the net with a wicked free kick. Straight from the kick off, Barnes levelled things up in spectacular fashion, latching onto Boubakary Soumare’s flick-on before curling home an unstoppable strike. 

Leeds dominated the second period but it would be the Foxes who had the ball in the net, only for Ademola Lookman’s effort to be ruled out for offside following a VAR check.

West Ham 3-2 Liverpool

The final game of the weekend saw high-flying West Ham continue their fine form with a pulsating 3-2 win over Liverpool - a result that ended the Reds' 25-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

London Stadium was rocking after just a few minutes when Alisson flapped at Pablo Fornals' corner, punching the ball into his own goal under pressure from Angelo Ogbonna. The Brazilian, Jurgen Klopp and the rest of Liverpool's players wanted a foul, but neither the referee or VAR were having it.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's superb free-kick drew the sides level before the break, but it was West Ham who would push on to victory through goals from Pablo Fornals and Kurt Zouma. They rendered Divock Origi's consolation goal too little, too late, firing the Hammers up to third in the table.
