Premier League results & predictions - Gameweek 4

The first international break of the 2021/22 season is in the history books, and it's now nothing more than a distant memory following the weekend's round of Premier League action.

All the pre-Gameweek 4 talk surrounded Cristiano Ronaldo and whether he'd be making his Manchester United debut from the first whistle or from the bench against Newcastle United, while Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea were also in action.

Here's 90min's rundown of the Premier League weekend...

Saturday

Crystal Palace 3-0 Tottenham

The weekend got off to an absolute flyer, as Crystal Palace caused a huge shock by beating then-top of the table Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in the lunchtime kickoff.

The first half was a cagey affair, but the game sparked into life in the second 45 minutes, when Japhet Tanganga received his marching orders for a second bookable offence. The Eagles capitalised on their one-man advantage, scoring three times in the final 15 minutes through a Wilfried Zaha penalty and a superb Odsonne Edouard brace.

Spurs had no answers and couldn't find a way through the Palace backline, meaning Patrick Vieira ended the weekend with his first win as a Premier League manager - and against his fiercest of foes.

Arsenal 1-0 Norwich

Saturday afternoon also bore witness to the battle at the bottom, as 20th-placed Arsenal welcomed 19th Norwich City to the Emirates Stadium. This tongue-in-cheek 'relegation battle' was a tense affair, separated by only one goal, as the Gunners ran out eventual 1-0 winners over the Canaries.

The nervy home crowd was forced to wait for the deadlock to be broken, and it was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who made the difference on 66 minutes, tapping home a scruffy winner for Mikel Arteta's men.

That result lifted Arsenal off the bottom of the table, leaving Norwich to prop up the rest of the division.

Brentford 0-1 Brighton

This was a battle of two aesthetically pleasing Premier League teams, although what they produced was far from attractive. One goal separated the two sides at the final whistle, as Brighton pinched a dramatic 1-0 win at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The Bees fired the most shots over the 90 minutes, but the Seagulls have transformed into a ruthless machine, and Leandro Trossard converted only their second shot on target in injury time to clinch their third win in four matches.

As for Brentford, they are yet to add another victory to their total, after their impressive opening day win over Arsenal.

Leicester 0-1 Man City

The King Power Stadium played host to a repeat of this year's Community Shield final, as Premier League champions Manchester City travelled to take on FA Cup winners Leicester City. This time it was the Citizens who came out on top however, edging to a 1-0 win over the Foxes.

Pep Guardiola's side dominated the game for long periods, but struggled to find the killer blow against a stubborn Leicester. The Foxes folded just after the hour mark however, when Bernardo Silva took advantage of a fortuitous bounce to rifle home from close range.

Man City held on to maintain their clean sheet, leaving Leicester languishing in ninth position.

Man Utd 4-1 Newcastle

The main story of Saturday's action followed Man Utd - and more specifically, Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar started the clash with Newcastle, and he played a crucial role in the 4-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo opened the scoring from close range on the stroke of half-time, and restored the advantage after the break, cancelling out Javi Manquillo's equaliser. A brilliant Bruno Fernandes strike and a beautiful team goal rounded off by Jesse Lingard brought the game to a close, handing the Red Devils all three points.

All smiles on Ronaldo's second debut, then.

Southampton 0-0 West Ham

While several games threatened to end 0-0 this weekend, Southampton and West Ham United called our bluff and went the whole way. Neither side was able to break the deadlock on the south coast, although there wasn't a shortage of action, either.

Michail Antonio was awarded a red card in injury time of this match, meaning he will now miss the Hammers' next league game against Man Utd.

Watford 0-2 Wolves

Watford were looking to pick up their second win of the season on Saturday against Wolverhampton Wanderers, a side still looking for their first points of the new campaign. It was the visitors who grabbed the spoils on this occasion though, eventually strolling to a 2-0 win over the Hornets.

Wolves controlled most of the play over the course of the 90 minutes, and finally found their breakthrough with a quarter of an hour to play, after Francisco Sierralta turned a header into his own net.

Debutant Hee-Chan Hwang killed the game on 83 minutes, bagging his first goal in his new colours, and firing Bruno Lage to his first win as Wolves manager.

Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa

Chelsea's impressive start to the new season continued at Stamford Bridge, although they didn't have it all their own way against Aston Villa, despite the convincing 3-0 scoreline.

Romelu Lukaku bagged his first goal at the Bridge after 15 minutes, racing onto Mateo Kovacic's through ball, cutting inside and slamming home. Villa had their chances to pull level over the next half hour, but goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was in inspired form, keeping the Blues' advantage intact.

Kovacic doubled Chelsea's lead five minutes into the second half, pouncing on a mix-up at the back, and Lukaku blasted home a stunning strike in injury time to add some gloss to a hard-earned win for Thomas Tuchel's side.

Sunday

Leeds 0-3 Liverpool

Leeds vs Liverpool always promised entertainment, and Leeds made sure it came after essentially deciding not to defend for large spells against one of the best attacks in world football.

Mohamed Salah and Fabinho's goals either side of half time ensured Liverpool took control, but the game was overshadowed around the hour mark after Harvey Elliott suffered a serious leg injury following a duel with Pascal Struijk. The Belgian was soon after sent off.

Sadio Mane, who missed a number of opportunities throughout, rounded things off in injury time with a third, taking Liverpool joint top of the table with Man Utd & Chelsea.

Monday

Everton 3-1 Burnley

Everton had to come from behind to preserve their unbeaten start to the Premier League season, beating Burnley at Goodison Park in spectacular fashion.

The visitors took the lead through a Ben Mee header, thought a tactical change from Everton boss Rafa Benitez and a Michael Keane equaliser got them back on track.

Andros Townsend then scored his first goal for the club with a sensational long-range drive, before Abdoulaye Doucoure sliced open the Burnley defence with an inch-perfect through ball for Demarai Gray to score Everton’s third.
