The 2023 season opener between the Portland Timbers and Sporting Kansas City has been rescheduled to Monday, February 27, due to poor weather conditions, Major League Soccer has announced.

The match was originally due to take place on Saturday February 25 but has been moved because of the extreme winter conditions in Portland.

Kick-off between the two Western Conference clubs will be at 10pm ET (7pm local), with all tickets for the original slating on Saturday to be honored.

Both sides are looking to kick-start what they hope will be a successful 2023 campaign after missing out on the MLS Cup Playoffs last season.

The Timbers missed out on the Playoffs by just one point and one place in the standings below Real Salt Lake. SKC, meanwhile, were further back in 12th in the Western Conference, seven points off the Playoffs, though their late-season form suggests they could make a run for the post-season this time around.

Each team won their home games against Monday's opposition by emphatic scorelines last season, with Portland running out a 7-2 thrashing at Providence Park, while SKC took revenge with a 4-1 scoreline at Children's Mercy Park.
