Poland 1-1 England: Player ratings as Poles grab stoppage-time equaliser

A long-range strike from Harry Kane was not enough to England victory over Poland in Warsaw, with the hosts grabbing a stoppage-time equaliser to end the Three Lions' 100% winning record in World Cup qualifying.

The game got off to an intense start with tackles flying in from both teams right from the off. Kalvin Phillips picked up an early yellow card for England as they struggled with their build-up play.

The first real opening came on the half-hour mark when Robert Lewandowski exchanged a neat one-two, but could not quite make contract with the return pass inside the box.

The contest continued to be feisty and after the half-time whistle was blown, various players from each team were involved in an on-field fracas for which Harry Maguire and Kamil Glik were shown yellow cards.

After the break, England improved. Jack Grealish went close within minutes while Harry Maguire slammed a header against the post with 30 minutes left to play. Meanwhile, Poland only threatened occasionally with Lewandowski largely starved of the ball.

Eventually, England got the breakthrough with Kane lashing home a terrific 30-yard strike through a string of opposition players.

After the goal England had a scare when Jordan Pickford blasted a clearance straight into an onrushing striker. Luckily he was able to recover the ball before it crossed the line.

In second-half stoppage time, Poland would score with Jakub Moder turning Kyle Walker beautifully and crossing into the box. Although the resulting shot was blocked, the ball then fell to Lewandowski, who crossed for Damian Szymanski to head home a dramatic equaliser.

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Jordan Pickford (GK) - 5/10 - Very little to do, but he was quick off his line to deny Lewandowski in the first half. Made a horrific error that was almost punished right at the end.

Kyle Walker (RB) - 6/10 - Relished the physical battle and set the tone for the backline. Offered a threat going forward too with his surging runs. Absolutely skinned by Moder for the goal mind you...

John Stones (CB) - 6/10 - Shook off a first-half knock to play the full 90 minutes. Not quite as imperious as his defensive partner, misplacing passes and losing his man a few times.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 7/10 - Did not put a foot wrong and made several important interventions. Also bounded forward into midfield as things progressed.

Luke Shaw (LB) - 6/10 - Pushed very high and whipped in an extraordinary amount of crosses - although few were accurate. Defensively, he was comfortable, until Szymanski beat him for the goal.

2. Midfielders

Kalvin Phillips (CM) - 7/10 - Handed a ludicrously harsh booking inside 10 minutes. Made one terrible passing decision in the first half but did well other than that, getting England going after the break with his up-tempo approach.

Declan Rice (CM) - 6/10 - A string of impressive interceptions and he rarely gave the ball away. Plugged the gaps when England's full-backs surged forward too.

Mason Mount (AM) - 5/10 - A rare quiet game. He struggled to find his usual pockets of space and was locked down effectively by Poland when he did. Off the ball he worked extremely hard.

3. Forwards

Raheem Sterling (RW) - 5/10 - Sometimes did too much on the ball, running down blind alleys. He has had much better matches.

Harry Kane (ST) - 8/10 - We all know he is effectively dropping deep, but at times he was literally in a right-back berth. Improved after the break and got his goal - and what a strike it was.

Jack Grealish (LW) - 6/10 - Provided England with some much needed penetration thanks to his excellent dribbling. Drifted in and out of the game, though.
