Pledgeball have launched a new initiative ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup aimed at increasing engagement in women's football culture.

After the 2022 Euros, the Lionesses sent an open letter to the UK Government calling on them to ensure that girls are able to play football in PE lessons. Girls accessing education has the potential of avoiding nearly 85 gigatonnes of carbon emissions and ‘girls who play sport are more likely to get better grades in school’.

Pledgeball's World Cup Campaign, supported by Football Beyond Borders, Girls United, AFTV and 90min Football, builds upon the Lionesses' Euros legacy. The campaign aims to reduce emissions in two ways:

  1. By rallying this international community of fans to collectively reduce emissions and take a stand on environmental sustainability.
  2. By supporting girls’ access to sport and education, both in the UK and abroad.

Throughout the World Cup, advocates from competing nations across the world will be encouraging fellow fans to make pledges in support of their national teams, pushing their teams up the Pledgeball League table in the process, and entering a draw to win prizes.

Pledgeball is a research-backed charity that engages fans around environmental sustainability, working with stakeholders across the football community from clubs to partners the Football Supporters' Association, from County FAs to leagues. Pledgeball are also organisers of Green Football Weekend.

To find out more about the initiative, listen to episode six of 90min and Pledgeball's podcast 'Football's Climate Conversation':

Former Italy international Arianna Criscione, Dulwich Hamlet's Brittany Saylor and Football for Future founder Elliot Arthur-Worsop join Katie Cross to have football's climate conversation about the Women's World Cup and tournament football's carbon footprint. Pledgeball's Heather Ashworth also gives an update on the Pledgeball's new Women's World Cup initiative.
