Players who have scored more league goals than Liverpool in 2021

When Divock Origi crashed an effort off the bar against Burnley on Thursday evening, it became apparent that Liverpool might actually never score a Premier League goal again.

The defending champions haven't hit the back of the net with any of their 87 shots since Sadio Mane opened the scoring against West Brom in December. They've gone a whole 432 minutes without a goal since then: their worst barren run since Gerard Houlier was in charge.

They are yet to score in the Premier League in 2021, and in case you're in any doubt over how poor that distinction is, here are a bunch of people who have.

1. Andy Carroll

Newcastle are one of few teams with a poorer record than Liverpool since the turn of the year (they've actually lost every game in all competitions).

They've scored just once in the Premier League, in a 2-1 defeat to Leicester, and who scored it other than Andy Carroll?

The former Liverpool target man hadn't hit the back of the net in almost three years when he emerged from the bench against the Foxes, but now finds himself outscoring the entire Reds side this calendar year.

2. Marko Dmitrovic

Don't ask me while Eibar keeper Marko Dmitrovic stepped up to take an penalty against Atletico Madrid. Ask him instead.

The ex-Arsenal striker has been handed a career lifeline in Scotland, and while his big, immobile presence was a bit of a laughing stock to begin with, he is steadily starting to look like the player Livingston hoped they were getting.

He's scored twice in his last two starts, and his recent equaliser against Celtic added his long name to the long list of players who have scored more goals than Liverpool this year.

4. David McGoldrick

Sheffield United haven't had much luck in front of goal this season, but the Premier League's bottom side would be far worse off without David McGoldrick.

A player who once memed Chelsea out of existence when he ended a 15-month-long run without a league goal at their expense, he's scored five times in the league this season - including one against Spurs in last weekend's 3-1 defeat.

5. John Stones

One team who have had no trouble scoring goals since the turn of the year is Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's team have netted ten times in their four games this term, winning four from four, and even Stones has got in on the act.

As recently as November things were so bad for Stones that he was being linked with a move to mid-table Arsenal, but he has re-emerged to become an important player in City's charge towards another title.

He hit a brace in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace. If you haven't picked it up by now, that's two more than Liverpool have managed in the entire year.

6. Tom King

Tom King, pack it all in and retire. You've just scored from 105 yards - it's all downhill from there.

The Newport County keeper went down in the Guinness World Records for this one, surpassing Asmir Begovic's previous record for longest goal in football. But he wasn't claiming he meant it - instead, he apologised to opposing number Joshua Griffiths. What a man.

“The lads were asking why I didn’t celebrate, but it’s the Goalkeepers’ Union and I even apologised to him after the game," he told South Wales Argus. "I said sorry and if it was the other way around I’d like to think that he’d say sorry to me!

“The wind was very swirly but the bounce was unbelievably lucky – I nearly had one against me when we played Morecambe at home last year, when I only just managed to dig it out. I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end.

“It felt weird, I didn’t know how to react. The boys were saying that I should have sprinted down to the other corner for a celebration.”

7. Burnley FC

Ashley Barnes' penalty on Thursday was Burnley's tenth league goal of the season, and their first of 2021.

But, you guessed it, that's still one more than Liverpool have managed this year.
