Philadelphia Union have signed full back Alvas Powell as a free agent on a one-year minimum senior contract.

The player currently holds a United States green card, meaning he will not be taking up an international spot on Philadelphia’s roster.

Powell has extensive MLS experience, featuring for the Portland Timbers, FC Cincinnati and Inter Miami CF in the past. He has made a total of 138 MLS appearances since 2013, recording six goals and ten assists. Prior to joining the Philadelphia Union, the defender last played at Sudanese team Al-Hilal Club.

“We are excited to add Alvas to our defensive unit. He brings almost eight years of MLS experience to the club as well as the mentality and work ethic it takes to win a cup,” sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a release. “He has the physicality required to contribute to all phases of play and adds important depth to our backline.”

During his time in Major League Soccer, Powell provided great assistance to each team. In 2015, he helped the Portland Timbers win the MLS Cup. Internationally, he has made 49 caps for the Jamaican men’s national team and recorded two goals. With Jamaica, Powell plays alongside two now-Union teammates Andre Blake and Cory Burke.

The Philadelphia Union strengthened their squad with another full back option beyond Olivier Mbaizo. Though Mbaizo has become an integral part of the Union’s starting 11, the squad requires depth to succeed in the league. Powell will also challenge homegrown player Nathan Harriel’s position.

The Philadelphia Union currently stands in second place on the Eastern Conference table, only three points behind the New England Revolution. The team is also the last MLS representative in the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League, facing Liga MX side Club America in the semi final series.

After the international break, the Philadelphia Union faces Atlanta United in hopes to surpass and reach the top spot on the table.
