Philadelphia Union captain Alejandro Bedoya signs one-year contract extension

The Philadelphia Union have tied down club captain Alejandro Bedoya to a one-year contract extension through the 2023 MLS season.

Bedoya's current deal was due to expire at the end of the current campaign, at which point he would have been eligible for free agency.

The 35-year-old midfielder has been with the Union since 2016, joining as a Designated Player from Ligue 1 side Nantes. During that time, Bedoya has scored 25 goals and provided 24 assists in 206 appearances across all competitions.

Bedoya has been particularly prolific this season with six goals and six assists.

“Alejandro embodies the spirit and passion of this team and this city. His mentality and leadership have had a major impact on the young core that has been so successful for us these past few seasons, and right now he’s having one of his best seasons in MLS,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a club press release.

“He’s a leader in our locker room and our community, and it was important to ensure he returns next year as we look to continue competing for trophies in MLS and international competitions.”

A 66-time United States international, Bedoya has been captain of the Union since 2017 and helped them lift the Supporters' Shield in 2020.
