Inter Miami continued their 2022 MLS campaign without a victory, suffering a frustrating 2-0 defeat against LAFC on Saturday at DRV PNK stadium.

Despite hopeful offseason changes and a roster revamp, the South Florida team is three matches in and have only managed to snag one point.

After the match, head coach Phil Neville opted out of his usual positive outlook and, instead, expressed disdain.

“I just wanted more quality from my quality players. Every team we’ve played against, their quality players stand up and score. Ours don’t and they need to,” he stated.

“I was expecting more quality in terms of the dominance that we had from our senior players, and they need to step up. I expect us in those moments to have better quality because that’s what we brought in. I expect us to have better quality because that’s what we’ve got on the pitch.”

The manager added that more is expected from Gonzalo Higuain specifically. The Argentine striker is the team’s only Designated Player after Rodolfo Pizarro was loaned to Liga MX side C.F. Monterrey for the remainder of the season.

“For us to be successful, he has to perform. For us to be successful, he has to perform in these moments for this team. That’s the challenge. For me, and I’m really strong on this, his role hasn’t changed. He is the one that is our best finisher. He is the one that we demand the most goals from. He is the one that we demand the most assists from. Period.”

Last season, the Juventus and Real Madrid player stood as their leading scorer with 12 goals and nine assists. Still, his efforts only landed the South Florida side in 11th place on the table. Since making their Major League Soccer debut in 2020, Inter Miami has yet to break into the playoffs or finish above ninth place on the Eastern Conference table.

During the offseason, Sporting Director Chris Henderson brought in Leonardo Campana, Emerson Rodriguez, DeAndre Yedlin, Damion Lowe, and Gregore, among others, to the team in the hopes of revolutionizing Inter Miami. But Henderson’s efforts have yet to make a difference on the pitch as the expansion team remains winless in 2022.
