Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed that forward Pedro Neto will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a nasty knee injury in Friday's 1-0 win over Fulham.

The 21-year-old, who bagged five goals and five assists in 31 appearances this year, managed just over half an hour in Friday's game before being forced off with the injury, which was immediately feared to be a serious one.

Wolves noted on their official website that scans revealed Neto had suffered a 'significant' injury to his knee cap and is set to undergo surgery later this week.

The statement adds that Neto 'is not expected' to play again for the remainder of the season, but the true impact of this issue is thought to be a lot more serious that Wolves are letting on.

According to Jornal de Noticias, Neto had been carrying a knee injury for the past few weeks but tried to play through the pain, and he has seemingly aggravated the problem to a point that he will now miss the European Championships this summer.

"Another obstacle that has appeared and that I will overcome, just as I have done with every other one," he wrote on Twitter. "It will be difficult spending months away from the place where I most like to be, but I will recover in the best way to return stronger than ever, that is guaranteed."

With Neto not expected back until next season, his chances of sealing a big transfer away from Molineux also seem to have disappeared.

Manchester United had been speculatively linked with a £50m move for the 21-year-old, while Juventus have also been linked in the past, but it seems highly unlikely that any club will shell out that kind of money on an injured player.

The news comes as a big blow to Wolves, who have also lost left-back Jonny Otto to yet another knee injury.

The Spaniard missed the first five months of the season with a knee injury, but after just seven games back in the team, he has been ruled out with a new ligament injury which will require surgery in the near future.
