Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich is a heavyweight clash between the noveau riche and old money.

When Franz Beckenbauer hoisted aloft Bayern Munich's first-ever European Cup in 1974, PSG had existed as a club for just four years.

However, much as Bayern may like to lean upon their tradition when coming up against PSG's petro-billions, the German giants have close ties to Qatar as well, with the state-owned national airline sponsoring Bayern since 2018.

Since their first meeting in 1994, before any controversial commercial deals, the two clubs have duked out 11 matches, all in the Champions League.

PSG and Bayern have never contested a competitive draw, with the French giants collecting six wins to five for their German counterparts.

The Parisians may not have had Qatar's cash injection at the time but they won four of their first five meetings with Bayern between 1994 and 2000.

In a reversal of roles from modern day perception, Bayern were considered a breeding ground for celebrity names which underperformed, earning the unflattering nickname FC Hollywood. Ottmar Hitzfield, fresh from leading Borussia Dortmund to an unlikely Champions League title in 1997, took over Bayern the following year, restoring the team to former glories with a renewed sense of discipline.

PSG lost 2-0 the first time they visited Munich with Hitzfield in the opposite dugout, ending their stellar start to the rivalry. Bayern topped the Champions League group the pair shared that year and would go on to lift the big-eared trophy seven months later.

When the clubs met for the first time in 17 years in the 2017/18 group stage, Bayern again blamed their failings on a relaxed approach. Carlo Ancelotti, a former PSG manager, was sacked the day after the Parisians romped to a 3-0 victory in the French capital.

Bayern's players reportedly organised secret training sessions behind Ancelotti's back to replicate the high-intensity workload they missed in the absence of Pep Guardiola. By the time PSG travelled to Bavaria, Jupp Heyneckes was back for his fourth stint in Bayern's dugout, steering a newly steely side to a 3-1 victory.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich H2H in Champions League knockout stage

The 2022/23 campaign will see PSG and Bayern meet in the Champions League knockout stage for the third time in four seasons.

Bayern Munich defeated PSG 1-0 in the first Champions League final behind closed doors in 2020 at the end of a mini-tournament in Portugal amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kingsley Coman joined PSG as an eight-year-old but left the club after 55 first-team minutes a decade later. Stealing in unmarked at the back post, Coman nodded in the only goal against his boyhood team to seal a European treble for Hansi Flick's side. He'd later score the only goal of their last 16 first leg meeting in France in 2023.

The following season, PSG earned some semblance of revenge by dumping Bayern out of the quarter-finals. Kylian Mbappe had been repeatedly thwarted by an inspired Manuel Neuer in the 2020 showpiece but stuffed the ball between the keeper's legs for the first of two goals in a 3-2 PSG victory in Bavaria.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored home and away against his previous employers (PSG, not Stoke City), including the only goal as Bayern defeated Les Parisiens at the Parc des Princes in the second leg. However, the away goals rule was still applicable at the time, ensuring PSG squeaked into the semi-finals.

Top scorers in Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich fixtures

Mbappe is the only player from either side to have scored as many as three goals in this fixture. As alluded to, Choupo-Moting is one of five players to have netted twice when these clubs have gone toe-to-toe.

George Weah scored in both group games against Bayern at the start of the 1994/95 campaign. The Liberian superstar finished as the Champions League's top scorer that season, collecting the 1995 Ballon d'Or as PSG reached the competition's semi-finals.

Carsten Jancker and Giovane Elber both helped themselves to a brace as Giovanni Trapattoni's Bayern steamrollered PSG in a 1997 group-stage clash. The 5-1 stomping for Die Roten remains the widest margin of victory in this fixture.

As a Lyon academy product, Corentin Tolisso has lost more matches to PSG than any other side (ten out of 15 meetings). However, the World Cup winner netted a brace against the capital club in one of just three career victories at the expense of his least favourite foe in 2017.
