Manchester United defender Ona Batlle has refused to address the ongoing uncertainty surrounding her future at the club.

Batlle joined United on a two-year contract from Spanish side Levante in the summer 2020 and has quickly established herself as one of the best full-backs in the WSL, as well as a fan favourite.

The 22-year-old was even named the club’s player of the year at the end of her debut season.

Batlle signed a two-year contract when she arrived at United, which is due to expire at the end of the current campaign. There is an option to extend that deal until 2023, but rumoured interest from other clubs has added to the uneasiness that United supporters are feeling.

WSL champions Chelsea, whose squad lacks specialised full-backs, have been linked. There has also been speculation about a return to Spain – Batlle started her career in the youth ranks at Barcelona. She is the only member of the current Spain squad playing her club football abroad.

But when asked about what the next few months hold while on international duty, Batlle appeared to be undecided and refused to be drawn into giving anything away on the subject.

“The future is the future,” she responded to Forbes. “I'm just now thinking about the national team, I cannot say anything about the future, we don't know the future.”

United will spend the remainder of the WSL campaign battling to finish in the top three and secure the Champions League place they narrowly missed out on last season. Whether their success or failure in that endeavour has any bearing on Batlle’s future remains to be seen.
