Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has confirmed that midfielder Nicolo Barella is on the cusp of signing a new contract.

A star of both Inter's Serie A title run and Italy's Euro 2020 success, Barella remains under contract at San Siro until 2024 but has recently found himself linked with moves away from the Nerazzurri.

Both Liverpool and the newfound riches of Newcastle United have been tipped to lure Barella away from Inter, but neither the club nor the 24-year-old have ever humoured a move away and talks over an extension have been ongoing for a while now.

"With Barella, we are now discussing the last details and it will probably be possible to formalise the deal before the derby [against AC Milan on November 7]," Ausilio revealed to Sky Sport Italia.

"We are talking about more formal aspects than anything else, so I am fully confident that the deal will be closed."

Barella's new five-year contract could be worth a cool €5m per season, and once his future is sorted, Inter plan to turn their attention to fellow midfielder Marcelo Brozovic - who has also been linked with a move away as he nears the final six months of his contract.

"I can only say that we have an enormous desire and pleasure to extend his contract and continue with him for longer," Ausilio said of Brozovic's future. "I met him and his agents and we will try to find a solution.

"He is certainly a player who we hope will be part of our project for the future, but we need to hear what the other side thinks and we will do this in the coming days."

Brozovic, who has been linked with Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United, has done little to reassure Inter, telling SportMediaset last month (via Football Italia): "Let’s see, we have to understand what they [Inter] say these days."
