Eddie Howe will lead Newcastle from the home dugout at St James' Park for the first time this week when the Magpies host Norwich in an early Premier League relegation six-pointer.

Howe was forced to isolate for the 3-3 draw with Brentford just over a week ago, while his first match with the team came away against Arsenal on Saturday.

Norwich, meanwhile, have also got a new manager and have started picking up points. Dean Smith has taken four points from a possible six so far, while the Canaries have gained seven from the last nine on offer to move off the bottom of the table and leapfrog Newcastle.

This is everything you need to know about the game...

Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie are both suspended for this one as a result of each accumulating five yellow cards - that means two of Newcastle's usual defensive starters are out.

Howe is at least fortunate that there are no new injuries to report. That should mean that Dwight Gayle will be available following a recent hamstring complaint, leaving Paul Dummett the only player sidelined at this moment in time.

Mathias Normann has been ruled out through injury after coming off early against Wolves at the weekend. He will be referred to a specialist for treatment on the hip problem.

Ozan Kabak has been back in training for a week and is available after a recent bout of illness. But Chrisoph Zimmerman continues to recover from ankle surgery last month and Sam Byram is building up fitness with the Canaries' Under-23 squad.

Newcastle haven't actually beaten Norwich since September 2016 when both clubs were in the Championship, picking up a 4-3 win at St James' Park when Dwight Gayle scored a hat-trick and two stoppage goals turned a 3-2 defeat into a victory.

Newcastle's last Premier League win in this fixture was more than six years ago in October 2015, with Georginio Wijnaldum scoring four times in a 6-2 thrashing.

The most recent meeting between these two clubs finished 0-0 at St James' Park in February 2020, while Norwich won 3-1 in the reverse fixture at Carrow Road that season when Teemu Pukki scored his first Premier League hat-trick.

Newcastle vs Norwich score prediction

Norwich are suddenly much improved and will see this as an excellent opportunity to pick up vital points against a direct relegation rival.

Newcastle are the only Premier League side still without a win so far this season and there is a reason for that unwanted tag. Howe arguably has a much harder task than opposite number Smith and is yet to see the fruits of any of the work he has done so far.

Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Norwich
