Newcastle and Leeds meet on Friday night both looking for a first win of the new Premier League season, taking only three points between them from four games each so far.

After opening with back-to-back defeats, the Magpies managed to get a draw against Southampton at the end of August but were heavily beaten by Manchester United last time out.

Similarly, Leeds bounced back from opening day defeat to draw with Everton and Burnley, before being soundly beaten by Liverpool in their most recent game last weekend.

The pair are now among only four win-less Premier League teams at this stage of the season, but will that change for one of them here?

Joe Willock is expected to be fit to start for Newcastle after coming away from Old Trafford last weekend with a knock. Ryan Fraser is also available after missing out on the trip to Manchester.

However, striker Callum Wilson remains out and could be a doubt until October. Jonjo Shelvey and Paul Dummett are also still sidelined, while Martin Dubravka is expected to resume training next week. In the meantime, there could be a return for Karl Darlow in goal to replace Freddie Woodman.

Leeds lost their appeal against the red card shown to defender Pascal Struijk against Liverpool, meaning he starts a three-game suspension. Diego Llorente won’t make it back just yet after coming off last weekend, with Robin Koch also still out.

With three defenders missing, Marcelo Bielsa could be forced into a reshuffle at the back.

Newcastle vs Leeds head-to-head record

Since first meeting in 1924, Newcastle and Leeds are dead even. Each has won 39 of 96 games, with a further 18 ending in draws.

Leeds won both Premier League games last season, taking a 5-2 victory at Elland Road in December and later winning 2-1 at St James’ Park in January. Newcastle haven’t beaten Leeds in the Premier League since 2004, although they did win at Elland Road in the Championship in 2016.

Newcastle vs Leeds score prediction

Logic says there should be goals in this one. Neither team has been at all strong defensively so far this season, with Newcastle conceding 12 in four games and Leeds leaking 11 – only bottom club Norwich have a record as comparably bad at this stage.

Equally, however, they aren’t bad going forward. Newcastle have only failed to score in one game so far and, despite a lack of points, have netted twice in two others. Last weekend against Liverpool was the first time Leeds have drawn a blank and they still seriously threatened to score.

Prediction: Newcastle 3-2 Leeds
