Newcastle United are looking for a fee of around £11m-£12m from Bayern Munich for Kieran Trippier, according to a new report.

The 33-year-old has emerged as a shock transfer target for the Bavarian giants, who are looking to strengthen Thomas Tuchel's squad to avoid losing out to surprise Bundesliga table-toppers Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern lost 1-0 to Werder Bremen at the weekend while Leverkusen overcame RB Leipzig 3-2 thanks to a last-minute goal, opening up a seven-point gap between the two sides.

Newcastle's form has declined this season thanks to a combination of injuries and a hectic fixture schedule that's included six Champions League group games, and the Magpies sit just inside the Premier League's top ten after losing ten of their 21 matches.

Trippier has been one of the club's more prominent attacking outlets and is regarded by many to be one of Newcastle's most important assets despite making a number of alarming defensive errors in recent weeks.

But Bayern's interest, coupled with Newcastle's need to strengthen in midfield and their inability to spend in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, means a deal is currently being discussed, though Sky Sports note that the club would prefer to keep hold of Trippier if at all possible.

Sources have indicated to Sky Germany that Newcastle will only consider a permanent transfer or a loan move that involves an obligatory future fee, with £11m-£12m suggested as a potential asking price for Trippier.

Bayern have been trying to sign Nordi Mukiele on loan from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, but have so far come up short in their efforts to sign the Frenchman. That's led the Bavarians to Trippier, who the report says would be open to joining Harry Kane and Eric Dier in Munich.

Newcastle are also believed to have turned down an approach from Atletico Madrid for Callum Wilson but mounting rumours over the club's need to sell players - Bruno Guimarares and Alexander Isak were both headline names in Monday's gossip column - would suggest FFP compliance is a real concern at St James' Park.

Kalvin Phillips has been linked with a loan move to Tyneside, helping to fill the void left by Sandro Tonali's ten-month ban for betting regulation breaches. But Manchester City's desire to receive a loan fee and have the 28-year-old's wages paid in full has opened the door for other clubs in a better financial position to muscle in. West Ham United have been linked, potentially strengthening the options for David Moyes as the club seek another top-six Premier League finish.
