Eddie Howe will welcome the break from Premier League action as Newcastle host Cambridge in the FA Cup third round.

The Magpies last tasted lifted this piece of silverware all the way back in 1955, with the record becoming a reflection on the neglect inflicted upon the club in recent years.

Although survival in the top flight is far from assured, the Newcastle faithful will hope the arrival of new owners marks a shift in the attitude towards domestic silverware.

Here's how the Magpies could line up.

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Karl Darlow (GK) - Lost his place to Martin Dubravka in the league after a string of errors.

Javier Manquillo (RB) - Usually lines up on the left hand side, but he could benefit from playing on his favoured side this weekend.

Ciaran Clark (CB) - Has lost his place in the team but he could replace Fabian Schar this weekend.

Jamaal Lascelles (CB) - Will be keen to retain his place in the team with Newcastle linked to a host of central defenders.

Matt Ritchie (LB) - Shone under Howe at Bournemouth but has been missing recently after testing positive for Covid-19.

2. Midfielders

Jeff Hendrick (CM) - Has fallen out of favour in recent months and will be keen to show Howe what he can do.

Joe Willock (CM) - This weekend could be a good opportunity to rediscover the goalscoring touch which he's lost since he arrived permanently.

Joelinton (CM) - Looks like he is finally beginning to settle at Newcastle in his new role as a No.8.

3. Forwards

Miguel Almiron (RW) - Full of energy on the right-hand side, although he badly needs to improve his end product.

Dwight Gayle (ST) - Newcastle may seek a Wilson replacement in January, but Gayle will need to step up in the interim.

Jacob Murphy (LW) - His pace and trickery will be key to unlocking a deep Cambridge defence.
