Exclusive - Newcastle United are close to finalising a deal for Atletico Madrid's Kieran Trippier which will see him become their highest paid player, 90min understands.

The Magpies are 'highly confident' that Trippier will become their first signing of the January window, and they hope it will be the first of a number of deals.

As well as a right-back, they want a central defender, two midfielders and at least one additional forward, but more likely two. They would also be open to additional opportunities if the deal was right.

90min has learned that the club's owners have provided a substantial January budget as they look to give manager Eddie Howe a real chance of staying in the Premier League.

Talks are ongoing over Trippier, a deal first reported by 90min in December, and Newcastle are ready to pay Atletico's asking price of around £15m. The player is set to receive the biggest contract of his career.

31-year-old Trippier currently earns around £80,000 per week at Atletico, and will get more than a 50% pay rise by making the move to Tyneside.

90min understands that up to nine Premier League clubs had made contact about Trippier, but none will get near the contract on offer - especially in terms of duration - from Newcastle.

Sources also insist that there is unlikely to be a release clause in the deal should the club be relegated, but in return Trippier will not take a drop in salary should they fail to stay in the top-flight.

Newcastle's next Premier League clash is due to take place on 15 January against Watford - one of their biggest rivals in the battle to avoid relegation - and Howe is understood to want at least two new faces available for that clash.
