Newcastle 3-4 Man City: Player ratings as Ferran Torres bags hat-trick in crazy game

Premier League champions Manchester City set a new English record of 12 consecutive away victories with a wild 4-3 victory over Newcastle United.

As you'd expect, City completely dominated proceedings early on, but it was Newcastle who opened the scoring with a thumping header from Emil Krafth in the 25th minute. Joao Cancelo levelled things up with a deflected effort from range, and City then went ahead with an excellent flick from Ferran Torres. But the two teams would go in level at the break after Joelinton thumped home a penalty.

The Magpies hit the front when they were awarded another penalty, Joe Willock poking home on the rebound after missing his spot-kick. Pep Guardiola's side weren't to be outdone, as a quickfire double
from Torres had City back ahead just six minutes later.

City calmed things down after that and enjoyed large stretches of possession, passing Newcastle to death to see out an entertaining victory.

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Martin Dubravka (GK) - 5/10 - Didn't have a whole lot to do but probably could have done better with Torres' flick. Seemed to be out of position for no reason at all.

Jacob Murphy (RB) - 6/10 - For someone who is not a defender, Murphy did pretty well to contain Sterling. Pulled off a handful of decent challenges and kept the City winger silent.

Emil Krafth (CB) - 7/10 - Thundered an excellent header to bag his first Newcastle goal. Impressed in the air and did well to keep City's forwards pretty frustrated.

Federico Fernandez (CB) - 5/10 - Didn't enjoy being pulled around by City's forwards. Looked like a man who was ready for the season to end.

Paul Dummett (CB) - 5/10 - A classic Dummett performance here. Mixed some good defending with some awful mistakes. Fortunate not to be punished.

Matt Richie (LB) - 6/10 - Some outstandingly awful fouls which looked more like WWE moves at times. Did very well from dead balls and set-pieces to give Newcastle some good chances.

2. Midfielders

Jonjo Shelvey (CM) - 5/10 - Didn't really want to be there. Thumped the bar with an excellent first-half free-kick and then looked to lose all enthusiasm.

Joe Willock (CM) - 7/10 - Made the bold shout of bumping Joelinton off his penalty and nearly had egg on his face when he missed. Did well to follow up.

Miguel Almiron (AM) - 6/10 - Looked very exciting on the counter and had City's centre-backs fearing for their lives at times, but was guilty of holding on to the ball a little too often.

3. Forwards

Allan Saint-Maximin (ST) - 7/10 - When you're restricted to counters, ASM is the kind of player you want. He looked very dangerous when running at City's defence and was involved in nearly everything good his side did.

Joelinton (ST) - 7/10 - Nearly broke the net with his penalty and enjoyed using his physicality against City's defenders.

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Scott Carson (GK) - 10/10 - Is still alive. 3,645 days since his last game, Premier League game, Carson is alive. (5/10, actually a little rubbish, did save a penalty though).

Kyle Walker (RB) - 5/10 - Definitely looked like a player who knew the hard work was over. Was out of position a lot and caught out for Newcastle's second penalty. Didn't want this one at all.

Eric Garcia (CB) - 5/10 - Will hope that Barcelona don't pull the plug on his move after this one. Had to do a lot to cover for Ake but didn't cover himself in glory.

Nathan Ake (CB) - 4/10 - A real liability at the back. Pushed up far too high for the first penalty and was then foolish enough to bite in the tackle. Made Garcia do twice as much work.

Joao Cancelo (LB) - 8/10 - A City defender who was actually good! Cancelo was one of his team's best attackers, scoring the opening goal and involving himself in a few more. Looked really up for this.

6. Midfielders

Rodri (DM) - 5/10 - Guilty of losing possession a little too often. Didn't seem aware of what was going on around him and put his side at risk a little too often.

Ilkay Gundogan (CM) - 8/10 - Dictated this game from start to finish. Excellent in possession and dangerous in attack, Gundogan made everything look so effortless.

Bernardo Silva (CM) - 7/10 - Found plenty of space on the pitch and buzzed around looking for the ball constantly.

7. Forwards

Ferran Torres (RW) - 9/10 - What a performance. Some excellent goals and the kind of movement which deserved a few more. Will be in with a shout of starting the Champions League final at this rate.

Gabriel Jesus (ST) - 6/10 - As a striker, Jesus was not good. Didn't pose any goal threat but made up for it by dropping deep (too deep at times) to try and help the build-up.

Raheem Sterling (LW) - 5/10 - City had a lot of fun in attack, and Sterling was involved in almost none of it. Completely drifted out of the game at times and must be fearing for his spot at the Euros.
