New York Red Bulls have re-signed defender Tom Edwards on loan from English Championship club Stoke City for the duration of the 2022 MLS season.

Edwards, who can play at right-back and center-back, already spent 2021 with Red Bulls on loan from Stoke. He played 27 games and just under 2,000 minutes in the regular season.

90min revealed in January that Red Bulls were among several MLS teams keen on bringing Edward back to the United States, but that they were leading the race. Now, that race has been won.

“I am pleased to have Tom back with the squad”, head coach Gerhard Struber said in a release.

“Not only does he have top quality on the field but he is great to have in our locker room. Tom’s warrior mentality will be helpful for us this year.”

Taking to Twitter, the player described himself as ‘absolutely buzzing’ to be heading back.

Edwards clearly left an impression in New York with Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber calling the three-time England Under-20 international a 'machine' back in October.

Initially, it was thought that Edwards would go back to the bet365 Stadium to try and win a place in Michael O'Neill's Stoke side. But the full-back picked up a knee injury shortly after his return and ended up not featuring for the club before now leaving again.

Red Bulls start their 2022 regular season away to San Jose Earthquakes on February 26.
