New England Revolution acquire veteran fullback Ben Sweat

The New England Revolution have added to their full-back depth by signing ex-Sporting KC left-back Ben Sweat through the rest of the 2023 Major League Soccer season, with a club option of 2024. 

The 31-year-old most recently played with Sporting KC, recording three assists in 25 appearances for the club. Now, under head coach Bruce Arena, Sweat will likely be the backup option for first-choice fullbacks Brandon Bye and Dejuan Jones. 

“Ben Sweat is an experienced defender in our league, and his arrival adds depth and versatility to our roster,” said Arena.

The 31-year-old has over has garnered over 100 appearances in MLS during his time with New York City FC, Inter Miami CF, Austin FC, and Sporting KC. The New England Revolution will be his third team in three and a half years. 

He first kicked off with New York City FC, before being picked up by Inter Miami as the first overall pick in the 2019 MLS Expansion Draft. He stood as the tenth player signed to Inter Miami CF’s inaugural roster, going on to make 20 appearances before making the jump.

Sweat now joins the Revolution during a period of great success for the club, as they currently sit first in the Eastern Conference with five wins through eight games. New England will look to continue their good form this weekend as they take on Sweat’s ex-team Sporting KC, at Gilette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
