There was nothing to separate Spain and the Netherlands at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Wednesday evening as the pair played out a 1-1 draw in an international friendly.

Spain dominated the first period and deservedly led at half time thanks to a cool finish from Sergio Canales following the excellent Alvaro Morata's through ball.

But the Netherlands made four changes at half time and were much the better team in the second half, equalising two minutes after the break through Donny van de Beek's half volley.

Let's get into some player ratings.

The Netherlands

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Marco Bizot (GK) - 6/10 - Could do little about Spain's opener and produced a good save to keep out Morata in the first half.

Hans Hateboer (RB) - 5/10 - Got forward well on a couple of occasions but his end product and decision making was lacking. Was involved in a nasty head collision with Gaya after half an hour, and was substituted at half time.

Joel Veltman (CB) - 6/10 - Struggled to contend with Morata but looked much more assured when the Juventus man departed and turned in a much improved second half display.

Nathan Ake (CB) - N/A - Forced off after six minutes after pulling up with a hamstring injury

Owen Wijndal (LB) - 6/10 - Showed good patience to pick out an unmarked van de Beek at the back post for the Netherlands' equaliser as his cross unintentionally went all the way through to the Manchester United man.

2. Midfielders

Frenkie de Jong (CM) - 4/10 - Played a superb, defence splitting pass to send Hateboer away on the stroke of half time. However, it was his only noteworthy contribution, and he was hauled off at half time.

Donny van de Beek (CM) - 7/10 - Levelled the scores after ghosting in at the back post and slamming home a first-time half volley. Ran his heart out and was a beneficiary of the Netherlands' half time substitutions, growing in influence as the game progressed.

Georginio Wijnaldum (CM) - 4/10 - One of four players hauled off at half time after a quiet first half performance.

3. Forwards

Memphis Depay (FW) - 5/10 - Should have given the Dutch the lead in the second half, but almost had too much time and Simon produced a superb save.

Luuk de Jong (ST) - 5/10 - Produced the Netherlands' only moment of note in the first half, forcing a comfortable save from Simon with a tame strike from the edge of the box. Should have put his side ahead with three minutes remaining but dithered on the ball in the Spain box.

Steven Berghuis (FW) - 4/10 - Another of the four players substituted at half time after failing to exert his influence on the game.

4. Substitutes

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Unai Simon (GK) - 7/10 - Made a stunning save to tip Depay's effort around the post in the second half. Almost too casual when attempting to play out from the back in the first half but otherwise very assured with his feet.

Hector Bellerin (RB) - 6/10 - Making his first international appearance for over four years. Slightly fortunate to not concede a penalty with a nudge on De Jong in the first half. Forced Bizot into a save with a low drive in the second.

Eric Garcia (CB)
- 6/10 - Rarely tested in the first half, just played out from the back very competently. Both he and Martinez were stretched in the second, with the Netherlands getting in behind too easily on a number of occasions.

Inigo Martinez (CB) -
6/10 - Comfortable on the ball but was left exposed at times in the second half, with a huge gap between himself and Garcia at times.

Jose Luis Gaya (LB)
- 5/10 - Forced off just before the half hour mark following a nasty head collision with Hateboer (who was very apologetic).

6. Midfield

Rodri (CM) - 6/10 - Controlled the game in the first half but was less influential in the second as the Netherlands pressed with a greater intensity. Glanced a header narrowly over in the latter stages of the second half.

Koke (CM) - 6/10 - Full of running and composed on the ball. Typified Spain's performance - quality in the first half, quieter in the second.

Sergio Canales (CM) - 7/10 - Opened the scoring with a perfectly timed run and cool finish into the bottom right hand corner - his first goal for his country.

7. Forwards

Marco Asensio (RW) - 7/10 - Relentlessly up and down the right flank, particularly lively in the first half. Was replaced after an hour.

Alvaro Morata (ST) - 8/10 - Played a sumptuous pass into Canales in the build up to Spain's opener. Dropped deep to great effect on a couple of occasions - sending Koke away with a particularly terrific pass in the second half.

Gerard Moreno (LW) - 6/10 - Deployed on the wing but drifted into more of a natural central striker's role when Morata dropped deep. Looked dangerous in the first half but was quieter in the second and was replaced after an hour.
