NBA star Dennis Schröder paid a moving tribute to the late Charlotte FC defender Anton Walkes, dedicating the LA Lakers' win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday to the player.

Walkes passed away on Thursday following a boating accident near Miami, South Florida, where Charlotte were in pre-season training ahead of the 2023 MLS campaign.

There has been an outpouring of grief for Walkes since the tragic news, not only from CLTFC and his former clubs Atlanta United, Portsmouth, and Tottenham Hotspur, but across soccer.

Walkes' passing has also resonated throughout the sporting world. On Friday, Schröder scored in the final seconds to help the Lakers beat the Grizzlies 122-121.

After the match, the Lakers posted on social media to say Schröder "dedicates this win to his friend, Charlotte FC player Anton Walkes, who tragically passed away yesterday".

During the match, Schröder wore shoes with 'RIP Anton. W' written on the side.

On Friday, Charlotte FC players and staff held a vigil with supporters for Walkes at the Mint Street Gate of their Bank of America Stadium home venue.

A number of figures from the club have publicly thanked those around the world for their messages of support, including president Joe LaBue.

"On behalf of the club we want to say thank you for the outpouring of support and kindness that has been shown across the world," said LaBue. "Please keep Anton and his loved ones in your thoughts. Be kind to each other, don’t sweat the little things, and enjoy every moment you have."
