It's always seen as the highest honour to don the fabled white shirt of England.

Players dream of the moment they are able to represent their country from their first kick of a football, with some fighting for their entire careers to make even a single appearance for the Three Lions.

However, there are plenty of stars who have been fortunate enough to play for England repeatedly over the years, becoming Wembley icons for their performances for the national team.

Here are the ten most capped England men's players of all time.

10. Bryan Robson - 90 caps

A former England captain, Bryan Robson earned 90 appearances for his country after establishing himself as an indispensable and iconic figure at Manchester United during the 1980s.

Robson represented England at five major tournaments, even managing 26 goals for the Three Lions - only 13 players have scored more over the years.

He may not have been able to guide England to international silverware, but he remains one of the most talented midfielders the country has ever produced.

9. Billy Wright - 105 caps

A Wolverhampton Wanderers hero, representing the Old Gold for two decades, Billy Wright also racked up an impressive 105 appearances for England after making his debut shortly after the end of the Second World War.

He captained England a staggering 90 times - a joint national team record - and the central-back even produced three goals from defence, as well as finishing as the runner-up in only the second ever Ballon d'Or in 1957.

8. Frank Lampard - 106 caps

Frank Lampard's England career spanned 15 years, with the legendary Chelsea midfielder making his debut in 1999 against Belgium. He even produced 29 goals for the Three Lions with his trademark late runs into the box and sharp finishing skills.

Lampard was voted England Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005, with the incredibly talented sides he inhabited having ultimately underperformed on the big international stage.

Although, who knows what would have happened had his 'ghost goal' against Germany at the 2010 World Cup counted.

7. Bobby Charlton - 106 caps

One of only two of England's 1966 World Cup winners to rack up over a century of caps, the late Bobby Charlton is tied with Lampard on 106 appearances for the Three Lions.

Arguably the greatest English player of all time, only Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney have scored more than Charlton's 49 goals for England, but the 1966 Ballon d'Or winner is one of the few players to have claimed a trophy for the country.

Charlton remains one of the great names of English football, with the former Manchester United forward boasting legendary status in the nation's history books.

6. Ashley Cole - 107 caps

Possibly England's greatest ever left-back, Ashley Cole dominated the left side of the defence for 13 years. Managing 107 appearances, the former Chelsea and Arsenal man is the only outfield centurion to have never found the back of the net for the Three Lions.

Cole was part of some extremely talented England sides over the years and repeatedly fought off competition for his starting berth with his tremendous performances for club and country down the left flank.

Cole made it into the Euro 2004 Team of the Tournament, while also being named England Player of the Year in 2010.

5. Bobby Moore - 108 caps

A true icon of English football, Bobby Moore captained England to their 1966 World Cup triumph, establishing himself as one of the greatest central defenders the world has ever seen.

The West Ham United legend was the runner-up in the 1970 Ballon d'Or and is one of the all-time England greats - if not the best the country has ever produced.

Alongside Wright, the centre-back boasts the joint record of 90 appearances as England skipper.

4. Steven Gerrard - 114 caps

The Liverpool legend was also an immense figure for England over the years, with Steven Gerrard being one of the all-round great midfielders to have donned the white national team jersey.

His time in the England squad wasn't always straightforward, with debates often raging about whether him and Lampard could play alongside one another, but his ability to produce big moments and his leadership qualities made him a vital inclusion for the Three Lions.

Ironically, him and Lampard both played their final game for England against Costa Rica at the 2014 World Cup.

3. David Beckham - 115 caps

One of England's few global superstars over the years, David Beckham boasted a frightening amount of natural talent. While he had his questionable moments at international level, the number seven jersey became synonymous with his flair and magic.

The midfielder was one of the sweetest strikers of a football that England fans have ever had the pleasure of witnessing, and was a stylish character on and off the pitch.

115 appearances for England is an astonishing total, with only two players having registered more.

2. Wayne Rooney - 120 caps

Until Kane burst on to the scene, Rooney was England's top goalscorer, netting 53 times in 120 appearances. The Everton and Man Utd forward epitomised a street footballer, and brought those relentless qualities to the national team setup.

He will be disappointed not to have been more influential at major tournaments, but Rooney is still regarded as one of the country's greats of the 21st century.

A 15-year international career came to an end against the United States in November 2018.

1. Peter Shilton - 125 caps

Peter Shilton managed a mightily impressive 125 appearances for England, with the goalkeeper having likely played more if it wasn't for the competition provided by Ray Clemence in the 1970s.

Shilton had the number one spot all to himself in the 1980s and was in the England goal during the infamous 'Hand of God' moment against Argentina at the 1986 World Cup.

The former Nottingham Forest stopper was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
