Major League Soccer terminated the contract of CF Montreal player Matko Miljevic for violating the “standard player agreement.”

The league initiated an investigation into Miljevic’s actions, after Canadian media reported the player engaged in a Quebec indoor amateur soccer league under a different name and was subsequently banned for life for punching another participant in the face.

Playing in any other amateur or professional league violated the MLS standard player contract.

Montreal manager Hernan Losada confirmed the team’s awareness of the situation, adding the player would not be part of training until otherwise approved by the league.

"We were made aware of the situation, and there is an open investigation into this matter," Losada said. "Matko will not be in training until everything is resolved. The people who need to make decisions will make them, but it's not for me to give my opinion while we're in the middle of an investigation."

But MLS confirmed on Monday the player would not return back to the league.

“Major League Soccer has terminated the contract of CF Montréal midfielder Matko Miljevic for engaging in conduct detrimental to the league and violating his Standard Player Agreement,” said the league in a statement.

Miljevic originally joined CF Montreal in August 2021 from Argentinian side Argentinos Juniors. He made 35 regular-season appearances, recording two goals and two assists in the 951 minutes played.

The midfielder had previously seen limited time on the pitch in 2023, after being sidelined for eight to 12 weeks following surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.
