MLS Confirm Restart in Disney World Tournament Starting 8 July

MLS has confirmed that play will resume again from 8 July, with all 26 teams set to take part in an all-new tournament.
As has been the case all around the world, play in MLS was halted in March as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. But a new plan has now been drawn up, prioritising the safety and well-being of everyone involved. Oh, and it's being held at Disney World.
The league confirmed on its official website that the 'MLS Is Back' tournament will be held from the start of next month at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida with 56 matches, regular season points and a spot in 2021 CONCACAF Champions League up for grabs.
Speaking on the decision to create such a tournament – particularly held at a single location – MLS Commissioner Don Garber explained: "The opportunity to have all 26 clubs in a controlled environment enables us to help protect the health of our players, coaches and staff as we return to play."
He also hinted at future developments allowing players and clubs to move forward on leading change within their own communities in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests in the United States over the last few weeks, adding: "We also recognise that the death of George Floyd and others has focused our country on issues of racial injustice, inequality and violence against black men and women.
"Together with our owners, players and staff, the league and its clubs are deeply committed to creating meaningful and impactful programs to address these issues that have plagued our society for far too long."
The group stages of the tournament will begin on 8 July, with ten teams eliminated for a knockout phase to begin a fortnight later – culminating in a final on 11 August. The regular season is expected to continue after the completion of the tournament.
