MLS in the Euro 2020: Player ratings from first round of fixtures
The 2020 European Championship has concluded its first round of group matches since kicking off on June 11 across the continent. The set of 12 fixtures brought a tremendous amount of quality from unexpected nations. Among the action, the Netherlands narrowly beat Ukraine in a shocking 3-2 victory, while an own goal by Mats Hummels gave France a 1-0 in.
Six Major League Soccer players were called up to represent their country in one of Europe’s most prestigious tournaments. While a couple players watched from the sidelines, Minnesota United’s duo of Jukka Raitala and Robin Lod made European Championship history with Finland.
Here are the ratings for every MLS player involved in the Euro 2020...
1. Poland
Przemyslaw Frankowski (Chicago Fire) - 6/10 - The Chicago Fire midfielder came onto the pitch for the final 16 minutes of the match as Poland trailed 2-1 against Slovakia.
A red card in the 62nd minute forced Poland to continue with only 10 men, making the comeback even harder. Frankowski managed to find pockets of space and set up chances, but Poland simply failed to find the equalizer.
2. Hungary
Szabolcs Schon (FC Dallas)- 7/10- The young FC Dallas forward entered the match in the 77th minute hoping to make an impact. Shortly after being subbed in, Schon created a stunning opportunity by running through the right before striking the ball toward goal. In only 24 minutes, Schon intensified the attack and put up an admirable fight to match clear favorites Portugal.
Daniel Gazdag (Philadelphia Union) - Despite being featured in Hungary’s Euro 2020 roster, the Philadelphia Union player did not make the squad for the game against Portugal.
3. Finland
Robin Lod (Minnesota United) - 7/10 - Minnesota United’s midfielder featured in Finland’s first ever European Championship victory. Robin Lod maintained the midfield stable and secure to enable forward Joel Pohjanpalo to score the only goal in Finland’s 1-0 win over Denmark. Lod kicked off the match with an offensive role, but as time progressed the player adapted to a defensive one to ensure his side held on for the win.
Jukka Raitala (Minnesota United) - 8/10 - Minnesota United’s offseason signing was also wonderful in Finland's win. Raitala defended well in the game, completing four clearances and three cross blocks in addition to 10 defensive stops. He successfully stopped Denmark from attacking on the left, leaving little options for their opponents.
Lassi Lappalainen (CF Montreal) - The CF Montreal player watched from the sidelines as Finland defeated Denmark 1-0.
