Major League Soccer clubs are eyeing Celtic midfielder James McCarthy, sources have told 90min.

90min understands the Houston Dynamo and Colorado Rapids in particular have expressed interest in the player as the league's Secondary Transfer Window approaches.

The midfielder first joined Celtic in 2021 from Crystal Palace, signing a four-year contract with the Scottish Premiership side. He's managed just 27 appearances across two seasons, struggling to find his footing under manager Ange Postecoglou.

A change of pace in the American league could be useful for the player, especially as both the Dynamo and Rapids look to strengthen their midfield in a bid to compete for a playoff spot.

Despite limited resources, newly appointed head coach Ben Olsen has worked wonders with the Houston Dynamo by leading the team to ninth on the Western Conference table. They currently boast a record of 5W-6L-3D, and have seen some great victories in 2023 but remain largely inconsistent.

In the span of 10 days, the Dynamo defeated Minnesota United 4-0 and fell to the Vancouver Whitecaps 6-2.

The Rapids, on the other hand, continue to struggle in the West. The Colorado club sits in last place on the table with just 12 points in 16 games and a record of 2W-8L-6D. Reinforcements are desperately needed as injuries plague the roster.

To combat recent results, the team called up midfielder Marlon Vargas and forward Rémi Cabral from the club's MLS NEXT Pro side on Short-Term Agreements, a sign of desperation.

Major League Soccer's Secondary Transfer window is open from Wednesday, July 5 to Wednesday, August 2.
