Manchester United defender Millie Turner has become only the third player to reach a century of appearances for the club, playing her 100th game in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Tottenham.

Ella Toone, who was sent off in the game in north London, hit the mark in April last season, with Katie Zelem recently following in September.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in front of tens of thousands of fans – including an away section packed with loyal United fans – was a fitting venue for Turner’s milestone appearance.

The centre-back was a member of the original United squad recruited when the club restarted its first-team operations in 2018 and has been a key player ever since.

Having spent a short time in United’s youth setup while at school, Turner had to look elsewhere for opportunities in senior football and was taken on by Everton. She later became Bristol City captain at the age of just 21 and was courted by current United boss Marc Skinner for his Birmingham side.

Instead, she chose to return home to Greater Manchester when United called, a snub which Skinner recently joked he still likes to remind her of even now.

Turner, who has signed a new contract until 2025, is rediscovering her best form this season after a very sudden health scare 13 months ago jeopardised her career and posed potentially even fatal risks.

She was successfully treated for a carotid artery dissection and was given an indefinite leave of absence to recover, returning to training during the summer and kicking off the new campaign by regaining her starting place and forming an outstanding partnership with Maya Le Tissier.

Turner has been on the fringes of the England squad in the past, earning a place at a training camp in September 2020. She remains uncapped at senior international level but will take heart from seeing Le Tissier successfully play her way into the Lionesses squad this season.
